Default How old were you when you learned how to drive?

I'm curious about the actual facts. How old were you when you learned how to drive?

My dad used to once in a while let me practice driving in empty parking lots, and then I proceeded to get a temporary license, but I never used it. I just wasn't that interested in it at the time and I always imagined screwing up, so I didn't feel I was ready.

Did any of you learn to drive at about the normal age or did you first learn to drive when you were older -- like in your mid-20s or maybe even 30s?

How old were you?

And if you don't currently drive, state your age.

As soon as my parents would let me practice.. age 14 I think. I never understood the people who put off getting a licenses. One of my friends waited until his 20's, I think it was because he got nervous when driving, and really wasn't that good. I let him practice with my car, and it was the last I let him do that.

Also my grandfather crashed his car into his garage once, and never drove again in his life. So I really think people (besides unicycle riding hippies) who avoid driving have low driving-related self esteem.

an old friend of mine waited until he was 21 to get a license--he knew if he got one, his parents would make him do errands.

I didn't learn to drive until I was 20. I was terrified of driving. My husband taught me and kicked my butt into learning to drive and getting my liscence. I love driving and being able to drive now but I am glad that I waited.

I was terrified because I felt it was such an awesome responsibility and during my teens I didn't feel I was mature enough to take on such a responsibility- to me it is a vehicle of life and death.

It didn't help getting "pep" talks from my mother. Here is what it was like.

ME "Mom, I am afraid to drive."

MY MOM "Oh I can see that dear, there are so many crazy drivers out there and so many people get killed from car wrecks- you can accidently run over someone and then that person or their family will sue you for your house and home and you can go to jail and you know what they do to you in prison (in reference to that Linda Blair prison movie)."

I was even more terrified then before after that discussion, lol.

I am happy to say I have never gotten a ticket or had an accident and am a good defensive and careful driver.

I was born with a steering wheel in my hand.

Permit at 14 or 15, can't recall. The DMV lady taking me out for my paces came back and told my mother, "That child can clutch, and downshift around corners. You won't have a problem with that one."

Why not at least take the test than? Get a driver's license for whenever you do decide you require to drive.

I think driving can be intimidating to teens. I think the age should be raised. When I got my license, I was 16 and an excellent driver, but even I had "teenage brain" moments where my judgment was questionable at best. Waiting for kids to get older and more mature is important, but then again, it can be a hardship on parents to not have their kids mobile.
