Why do we never get an answer
When we're knocking at the door?
With a thousand million questions
About hate and death and war.

It's where we stop and look around us
There is nothing that we need.
In a world of persecution
That is burning in it's greed.

Why do we never get an answer
When we're knocking at the door?
Because the truth is hard to swallow
That's what the wall of love is for.

It's not the way that you say it
When you do those things to me.
It's more the way that you mean it
When you tell me what will be.

And when you stop and think about it
You won't believe it's true.
That all the love you've been giving
Has all been meant for you.

I'm looking for someone to change my life.
I'm looking for a miracle in my life.
And if you could see what it's done to me
To lose the the love I knew
Could safely lead me through.

Between the silence of the mountains
And the crashing of the sea
There lies a land I once lived in
And she's waiting there for me.

But in the grey of the morning
My mind becomes confused
Between the dead and the sleeping
And the road that I must choose.

I'm looking for someone to change my life.
I'm looking for a miracle in my life.
And if you could see what it's done to me
To lose the the love I knew
Could safely lead me to
The land that I once knew.
To learn as we grow old
The secrets of our souls.

It's not the way that you say it
When you do those things to me.
It's more the way you really mean it
When you tell me what will be.

Why do we never get an answer
When we're knocking at the door?
With a thousand million questions
About hate and death and war.

It's where we stop and look around us
There is nothing that we need.
In a world of persecution
That is burning in it's greed.

Why do we never get an answer
When we're knocking at the door?

The faces all around me they don't smile they just crack
Waiting for our ship to come but our ships not coming back
We do have time like pennies in a jar
What are we saving for

There's a smell of stale fear and it's reeking from our skins
The drinking never stops because the drinks absolve our sins
We sit and grow our roots into the floor
What are we waiting for

So give me something to believe
Cause I am living just to breathe
And I need something more
To keep on breathing for
So give me something to believe

Something's always coming you can hear it in the ground
It swells into the air
With the rising
Rising sound
And never comes but shakes the boards and rattles all the doors
What are we waiting for

So give me something to believe
Cause I am living just to breathe
And I need something more
To keep on breathing for
So give me something to believe

I am hiding from some beast
But the beast was always here
Watching without eyes
Because the beast is just my fear
That I am just nothing
Now its just what I've become
What am I waiting for
Its already done

So give me something to believe
Cause I am living just to breathe
And I need something more
To keep on breathing for
So give me something to believe

If you don't mind why don't you mind
Where is your sense of indignation
You are too kind
Much too kind
Where is the madness that you promised me?
Where is the dream for which I paid dearly?
When things go wrong I sing along
It is the nature of the business
But you're not here to make my sad songs more sincere
No one will ever love you honestly
No one will ever love you for your honesty
No one will ever love you honestly
No one will ever love you for your honesty

Lyrics to Stephen Sondheim's "The Road You Didn't Take" come into my head regularly. It's about making choices and dealing with the "what-ifs" in life.:

The Road You Didn't Take

You're either a poet, or you're a lover
Or you're the famous Benjamin Stone.
You take one road, you try one door.
There isn't time for any more.
One's life consists of either/or.
One has regrets, which one forgets,
And as the years go on...

The road you didn't take hardly comes to mind.
Does it?
The door you didn't try, where could it have led?
The choice you didn't make never was defined.
Was it!

Dreams you didn't dare are dead.
Were they ever there? Who said!
I don't remember, I don't remember at all.

The books I'll never read wouldn't change a thing.
Would they?
The girls I'll never know, I'm too tired for.
The lives I'll never lead couldn't make me sing.
Could they?

Chances that you miss-- Ignore.
Ignorance is bliss-- What's more,
You won't remember, you won't remember at all.
Not at all.

You yearn for the women, long for the money,
Envy the famous Benjamin Stones.
You take your road, the decades fly.
The yearnings fade, the longings die.
You learn to bid them all goodbye.
And oh, the peace, the blessed peace...
At last you come to know:

The roads you never take go through rocky ground.
Don't they?
The choices that you make, aren't all that grim.
The worlds you never see, still will be around.
Won't they!
The Ben I'll never be, who remembers him?

I like the line between your belly and your thighs (rollin' along, rollin' along)
The smell of your hair, the sparkle in your eyes (rollin' along, rollin' along)
Smoke in your breath, your breathing hard and heavy
The back of your neck, the shine on your Chevy
The moon was so big when I drove into the levy, girl (rollin' along, rollin' along)

I found blood and I saw stars all in the backseat of your car
And I told you it was love, but you don't wanna know the truth
I'm a young man in my prime, but my heart's still filled with fear
And it goes on clear...

The clean dreams, the sexy limousine (rollin' along, rollin' along)
Jason's got the energy, used to be a coke fiend (rollin' along, rollin' along)
Skinny brown arms coming out of your shirt
Heart is in the right place, brain is in the dirt
You live life like everyone's an enemy (rollin' along, rollin' along)

I found blood and I saw stars all in the backseat of your car
And I told you it was love, but you don't wanna know the truth
I'm a young man in my prime, but my heart's still filled with fear
And it goes on clear...

This is just a song that I just keep singing. For over a year now. Not entirely sure why. Or maybe I do know why, in ineffable kind of way..

Somewhere Only We Know (Keane)

I walked across an empty land,
I knew the pathway like the back of my hand.
I felt the earth beneath my feet,
Sat by the river and made it complete.

Oh, simple thing, where have you gone?
I'm getting old and I need something to rely on.
So tell me when you're going to let me in,
I'm getting tired and I need somewhere to begin.

I came across a fallen elm tree,
I felt the branches; are they looking at me?
Is this the place we use to love?
Is this the place that I've been dreaming of?

Oh, simple thing, where have you gone?
I'm getting old and I need something to rely on.
So tell me when you're gonna let me in,
I'm getting tired and I need somewhere to begin.
So if you have a minute why don't we go,
Talk about it somewhere only we know?
This could be the end of everything.
So why don't we go, somewhere only we know,
Somewhere only we know.

This is from The Secret Garden, my favourite movie ever since I saw it 15 years ago. For the last two years I couldn't stop singing this song, during evenings when I'm alone, or quietly to myself when I'm at work and see that no one is around to hear..

Winter Light (Linda Ronstadt)

Hearts call
Hearts fall
swallowed in the rain
Who knows
life grows hollow and so vain

Wandering in the winter light
the wicked and the sane
bear witness to salvation
and life starts over again

Now the clear sky is all around you
Love's shadow will surround you
all through the night
Star glowing in the twilight
Tell me true
Hope whispers
and I will follow
till you love me too

And this is the third one.

Moment of Peace (Gregorian)

Come now, come by our side
A place where you can hide
We are the sunshine
Rest your soul here
And you'll find
We are the energy
We give the world to thee
Hold up your heart now
We will ease pain from your brow

When the world is in tatters
And destruction is near
You can come with us here

When the people are strangers
You'll rest here with me
In a moment of peace

Light up the dark below,
See through the stars,
Reach to the earth's flow
Drift in the joy of our hearts,
Unleash the energy,
Taste of the wine
Drink as a soul
That knows now, power divine

Psalm 102:1-12 set to meter.

To this my prayer O listen, LORD!
And let my cry for help reach You.
In day of grief hide not Your face.
Your list’ning ear toward me O bend;
The day I call, Your answer send,

For all my days go up in smoke,
And like a hearth my bones are burned.
Like grass my heart is crushed and dried;
I daily food forgotten leave;
My skin and bones together cleave.

With sighs and groans my frame resounds.
I’m like a desert pelican,
Or like an owl in ruined wastes.
I lie awake, as on the roof
A sparrow stands, alone, aloof.

All day my foes their taunts repeat;
Those filled with anger curse my name.
I food with tears and ashes mix,
For You on me in anger frown;
You raised me up to throw me down.

An ev’ning shadow are my days;
Like grass I wither soon away.
But You, Jehovah, sit enthroned
Forever; Your memorial
Abides through generations all.

I can tell by your eyes that you've
probably been crying forever
And the stars in the sky don't mean
nothing to you they're a mirror

And when I asked for a separate room
It was late at night
And we'd been driving since noon
But if I'd known
How that would sound to you
I would have stayed in your bed
For the rest of my life
Just to prove I was right
That it's harder to be friends than lovers
And you shouldn't try to mix the two
Cause if you do it and you're still unhappy
Then you know that the problem is you

These are great lyrics, but don't take my word for it, any major dude will tell you...

Steely Dan - Any Major Dude

I never seen you looking so bad my funky one
You tell me that your superfine mind has come undone
Chorus:
Any major dude with half a heart surely will tell you my friend
Any minor world that breaks apart falls together again
When the demon is at your door
In the morning it wont be there no more
Any major dude will tell you

Have you ever seen a squonks tears? well, look at mine
The people on the street have all seen better times

Chorus

I can tell you all I know, the where to go, the what to do
You can try to run but you cant hide from whats inside of you

Chorus

Steely Dan - Deacon Blues

I love the line, "I cried when I wrote this song"

This is the day
Of the expanding man
That shape is my shade
There where I used to stand
It seems like only yesterday
I gazed through the glass
At ramblers
Wild gamblers
That's all in the past

You call me a fool
You say it's a crazy scheme
This one's for real
I already bought the dream
So useless to ask me why
Throw a kiss and say goodbye
I'll make it this time
I'm ready to cross that fine line

CHORUS:
I'll learn to work the saxophone
I'll play just what I feel
Drink Scotch whisky all night long
And die behind the wheel
They got a name for the winners in the world
I want a name when I lose
They call Alabama the Crimson Tide
Call me Deacon Blues

My back to the wall
A victim of laughing chance
This is for me
The essence of true romance
Sharing the things we know and love
With those of my kind
Libations
Sensations
That stagger the mind

I crawl like a viper
Through these suburban streets
Make love to these women
Languid and bittersweet
I'll rise when the sun goes down
Cover every game in town
A world of my own
I'll make it my home sweet home

CHORUS

This is the night
Of the expanding the man
I take one last drag
As I approach the stand
I cried when I wrote this song
Sue me if I play too long
This brother is free
I'll be what I want to be

CHORUS

w00t! That song is sexy and awesome. :)

But it's annoying if/when it's in your head and you don't know all the words.
