definitely. I feel the same way.

Supposedly, Cat refused Telecom (and every other company that wanted the song) when they asked to use it but changed his mind after seeing the video.

This song has a lot of truth as well:

Mad World
Gary Jules (cover of Tears for Fears)

All around me are familiar faces
Worn out places, worn out faces
Bright and early for their daily races
Going nowhere, going nowhere
Their tears are filling up their glasses
No expression, no expression
Hide my head I want to drown my sorrow
No tomorrow, no tomorrow
And I find it kind of funny
I find it kind of sad
The dreams in which I'm dying
Are the best I've ever had
I find it hard to tell you
I find it hard to take
When people run in circles
It's a very, very
Mad World
Mad world
Children waiting for the day they feel good
Happy Birthday, Happy Birthday
And I feel the way that every child should
Sit and listen, sit and listen
Went to school and I was very nervous
No one knew me, no one knew me
Hello teacher tell me what's my lesson
Look right through me, look right through me
And I find it kind of funny
I find it kind of sad
The dreams in which I'm dying
Are the best I've ever had
I find it hard to tell you
I find it hard to take
When people run in circles
It's a very, very
Mad World
Mad World
Enlarging your world
Mad World.

I saw Gary Jules do a sound check of that song when he played here (I didn't stick around for his set). It was just random. I was at the venue and he happened to be there, on stage. Good song, both versions.

One of the prettiest songs, IMO (stunning, really...):

YouTube - Sting - Fields Of Gold

You'll remember me when the west wind moves
Upon the fields of barley
You'll forget the sun in its jealous sky
As we walk in fields of gold

So she took her love
For to gaze awhile
Upon the fields of barley
In his arms she fell as her hair came down
Among the fields of gold

Will you stay with me, will you be my love
Among the fields of barley
We'll forget the sun in its jealous sky
As we lie in fields of gold

See the west wind move
Like a lover's soul
Upon the fields of barley
Feel her body rise when you kiss her mouth
Among the fields of gold

I never made promises lightly
And there have been some that I've broken
But I swear in the days still left
We'll walk in fields of gold
We'll walk in fields of gold

Many years have passed since those summer days
Among the fields of barley
See the children run as the sun goes down
Among the fields of gold

You'll remember me when the west wind moves
Upon the fields of barley
You can tell the sun in its jealous sky
When we walked in fields of gold
When we walked in fields of gold
When we walked in fields of gold

Regina Spektor.

oh gosh. we haven't mentioned Regina.

watchwatchwatchwatchwatchwatchwatchwatchwatchwatch:

YouTube - Regina Spektor US

This song/music video should have its own thread because of: the stop motion animation, the oversized piano keys, her voice, the lyrics, the runaway table, her lips, the way she packs up the room, her facial expressions. wow.

Regina Spektor: Us

They made a statue of us
and put it on a mountaintop
Now tourists come and stare at us
Blow bubbles with their gum, take photographs of fun
have fun

they'll name a city after us
and later say it's all our fault
then they'll give us a talking to
then they'll give us a talking to
cause they've got years of experience

we're living in a den of thieves
rummaging for answers in the pages
we're living in a den of thieves
and it's contagious

we wear our scarves just like a noose
but not cause we want eternal sleep
and though our parts are slightly used
new ones are slave labor you can keep

we're living in a den of thieves
rummaging for answers in the pages
we're living in a den of thieves
and it's contagious

They made a statue of us
They made a statue of us
The tourists come and stare and us
The sculptor's momma sends regards
They made a statue of us
They made a statue of us
Our noses have begun to rust

we're living in a den of thieves
rummaging for answers in the pages
we're living in a den of thieves
and it's contagious

stronger - 30 seconds to mars cover version

Let's get lost tonight,
You can be my black Kate Moss tonight.
Play secretary, I'm the boss tonight,
And you don't give a fuck what they all say right
Awesome, the Christian in Christian Dior,
Damn, they don't make 'em like this anymore,
I ask 'cause I'm not sure,
Do anybody make real shit anymore?
Bow in the presence of greatness
'Cause right now thou hast forsaken us.
You should be honoured by my lateness,
That I would even show up to this fake shit.
So go ahead, go nuts, go ape shit...

I don't know if you got a man or not,
If you made plans or not,
If God put me in your plans or not,
I'm trippin', this drink got me sayin' a lot.
But I know that God put you in front of me,
So how the hell could you front on me?
There's a thousand yous, there's only one of me.
I'm trippin', I'm caught up in the moment, right
'Cause it's Louis Vuitton Don night,
So we gon' do everything that Kan like,
Heard they do anything for a Klondike,
Well, I'd do anything for a blonde dyke.
And she'll do anything for the limelight,
And we'll do anything when the time's right,
Uh, baby, you're makin' it
Harder, better, faster, stronger,

Now that don't kill me,
Can only make me stronger, oh!
I need you to hurry up now, oh!
'Cause I can't wait much longer, oh!
I know I got to be right now, oh!
'Cause I can't get much wronger, oh!
Man, I been waitin' all night now,
That's how long I've been on ya.

I need you right now,
I need you right now.

Father and Son by Cat Stevens. Affects me deeply. I particularly identify with the son's perspective.

(Father)
It's not time to make a change,
Just relax, take it easy.
You're still young, that's your fault,
There's so much you have to know.
Find a girl, settle down,
If you want you can marry.
Look at me, I am old, but I'm happy.

I was once like you are now, and I know that its not easy,
To be calm when you've found something going on.
But take your time, think a lot,
Why, think of everything you've got.
For you will still be here tomorrow, but your dreams may not.

(Son)
How can I try to explain, when I do he turns away again.
It's always been the same, same old story.
From the moment I could talk I was ordered to listen.
Now there's a way and I know that I have to go away.
I know I have to go.

(Father)
It's not time to make a change,
Just sit down, take it slowly.
You're still young, that's your fault,
There's so much you have to go through.
Find a girl, settle down,
If you want you can marry.
Look at me, I am old, but I'm happy.
(son-- away away away, I know I have to
Make this decision alone - no)

(Son)
All the times that I cried, keeping all the things I knew inside,
It's hard, but it's harder to ignore it.
If they were right, I'd agree, but it's them you know not me.
Now there's a way and I know that I have to go away.
I know I have to go.
(father-- stay stay stay, why must you go and
Make this decision alone? )

I love this song. It's always affected me a little. I didn't even know that it was both the son AND the father talking, though; I always thought it was just the dad! And I can totally relate to the son more, too. I love how he sings this song. :)

I almost wrote that a lot of people do not realize it's the father and son! So much more affecting knowing that. I was listening to it loads last night, then I called my Dad. :)

That's funny, I mentioned at another site that I wanted him to do "You Know What You Are" by NIN.

haha, cool! I don't know that one, yeah I think "Closer" would be hilarious...

Man, I didn't realize there were so many songs whose lyrics I really liked in this thread! Weird! I love the lyrics of "Mad World," too.

And I find it kind of funny
I find it kind of sad
The dreams in which I'm dying
Are the best I've ever had
I find it hard to tell you

Wait a minute... this is a lyrics thread, and no one has posted Sondheim?! No more, I say! ...and that's the song that plays in my head at least once a week. (the italicized lyric loops in my head far more often)

NO MORE

No more questions,
Please.
No more tests.
Comes the day you say, "What for?"
Please- no more.

MYSTERIOUS MAN
They disappoint,
They disappear,
They die but they don't...

BAKER
What?

MYSTERIOUS MAN
They disappoint
In turn, I fear.
Forgive, though, they won't...

BAKER
No more riddles.
No more jests.
No more curses you can't undo,
Left by fathers you never knew.
No more quests.

No more feelings.
Time to shut the door.
Just- no more.

MYSTERIOUS MAN
Running away- let's do it,
Free from the ties that bind.
No more depair
Or burdens to bear
Out there in the yonder.

Running away- go to it.
Where did you have in mind?
Have to take care:
Unless there's a "where,"
You'll only be wandering blind.
Just more questions.
Different kind.

Where are we to go?
Where are we ever to go?

Running away- we'll do it.
Why sit around, resigned?
Trouble is, son,
The farther you run,
The more you feel undefined
For what you've left undone
And, more, what you've left behind.

We disappoint,
We leave a mess,
We die but we don't...

BAKER
We disappoint
In turn, I guess.
Forget, though, we won't...

BOTH
Like father, like son.

BAKER
No more giants
Waging war.
Can't we just pursue out lives
With out children and our wives?
'Till that happy day arrives,
How do you ignore
All the witches,
All the curses,
All the wolves, all the lies,
The false hopes, the goodbyes,
The reverses,
All the wondering what even worse is
Still in store?

All the children...
All the giants...

No more.

The Kinks -- Strangers

Where are you going I don't mind
I've killed my world and I've killed my time
So where do I go, what do I see?
I see many people coming after me
So where are you going to I don't mind
If I live too long I'm afraid I'll die
So I will follow you wherever you go
If your offered hand is still open to me

Strangers on this road we are on
We are not two we are one

So you've been where I've just come
From the land that brings losers on
So we will share this road we walk
And mind our mouths and beware our talk
'Till peace we find, tell you what I'll do
All the things I own I will share with you
If I feel tomorrow like I feel today
We'll take what we want and give the rest away

Strangers on this road we are on
We are not two we are one

Holy man and holy priest
This love of life makes me weak at my knees
And when we get there make your play
'Cos soon I feel you're gonna carry us away
In a promised lie you made us believe
For many men there is so much grief
And my mind is proud but it aches with rage
And if I live too long I'm afraid I'll die

Strangers on this road we are on
We are not two we are one
Strangers on this road we are on
We are not two we are one

I love the way Devin writes his lyrics. They're are so... different.

Devin Townsend - The Death Of Music

Question...
Leapt like dog from man...
Terminate high thinking...
Known in your prophecy...

Sun... Son...
Sun it shifts, and brittleness subsides
To sleep... sleep away

One comes, the rain will always be
And things I am
Are things that should not be
They laughed at me but we never bothered

My friends and I
There were no others

Now it comes...
Bolt across the blue...
Shadows dance over the land...
Walls high, water deep
Brick and steel gathering speed
Guess it's just a feeling
Guess it's just a feeling...

Rain may come
The rain may never be
In things you are
Are things I need to be
My friends were there but they never bothered

Now there's you and I an
There are no others

It's like when death becomes musical
It's musical
It's like a death becomes musical
Musical

And it comes
To make sure that he will never rise
And the groans from the bellies
Have never cried this hard
And the eyes of the wicked ones
Have never been full of dust
In the middle of the sea it waits...
Closer...

Home, nor anywhere on Earth on that final day will anyone be apart
...one...schooled...together...
Towards the sea...
And we may drown, fly, fall from faith
...but the pain won't be realized
Because the emotions will hit as god should
And the mountains will offer no shelter
And the clouds will be no cover
No matter where we run...

Don't die on me
Don't go away
When I need you here
In my need

The rain will come
The rain will always be
In things I am
Are things that have to be
My friends have come and I never bothered

Myself and I
There is no other

It's like a death becomes musical
It's musical

Oh, how could I forget this one?

Devin Townsend - Dynamics

Winter hides the dead
Just like summer ends too soon
Springing forth the new knowing
Autumn is the tomb

And I'll wait for you
'Cause it's waiting for you
Living hides the dead just like
Suns and earth and moon
Springing forth the new knowing
Flowers need to bloom

And I'll wait for you
'Cause it's waiting for you
Unsure? Well, here's help with the wait
The heavens move and the earth will quake
And now god has failed as a metaphor
There's only awe forever more

Life is all dynamics
Life is all... dynamics
There's life in all dynamics

Life is all dynamic

Unsure? Well, here's help with the weight
There's only "god" for "heaven's" sake
There's only one key to unlock the door
You must get by the metaphor
(God help our mother... love one another!)

This part of Reptilia by the Strokes

I said please don't slow me down
If I'm going too fast
You're in a strange part of our town...

Yeah, the night's not over
You're not trying hard enough,
Our lives are changing lanes
You ran me off the road,
The wait is over
I'm now taking over,
You're no longer laughing
I'm not drowning fast enough.

Now every time that I look at myself
"I thought I told you
this world is not for you"

Here's part of one that I have a serious love-hate relationship with... As the thread title says, it won't leave me alone, but it may have scarred me.

"Fitter, happier, more productive,
comfortable,
not drinking too much,
regular exercise at the gym
(3 days a week),
getting on better with your associate employee contemporaries,
at ease,
eating well
(no more microwave dinners and saturated fats),
a patient better driver,
a safer car
(baby smiling in back seat),
sleeping well
(no bad dreams),
no paranoia,
careful to all animals
(never washing spiders down the plughole),
keep in contact with old friends
(enjoy a drink now and then),
will frequently check credit at
(moral) bank (hole in the wall),
favors for favors,
fond but not in love,
charity standing orders,
on Sundays ring road supermarket
(no killing moths or putting boiling water on the ants),
car wash
(also on Sundays),
no longer afraid of the dark or midday shadows
nothing so ridiculously teenage and desperate,
nothing so childish - at a better pace,
slower and more calculated,
no chance of escape,
now self-employed,
concerned (but powerless),
an empowered and informed member of society
(pragmatism not idealism),
will not cry in public,
less chance of illness..."

Everybody talks about a new world in the morning.
A new world in the morning so they say.
I, myself don't talk about a new world in the morning.
A new world in the morning, that's today.
And I can feel a new tomorrow comin' on.
And I don't know why I have to make a song.
Everybody talks a bout a new world in the morning.
New world in the morning takes so long.

I met a man who had a dream he had since he was twenty.
I met that man when he was eighty-one.
He said too many people just stand and wait up til the mornin',
Don't they know tomorrow never comes.
And he would feel a new tomorrow coming on.
And when he'd smile his eyes would twinkle up in thought.

Everybody talks about a new world in the morning.
New world in the morning never comes.
And I can feel a new tomorrow coming on.
And I don't know why I have to make a song.
Everybody talks about a new world in the morning.
New world in the morning takes so long.

Ooh, love Mad World.

Me too. A few years ago I had an obsession with it. I'd listen to it over and over every day (though it never quite got to the level where I would pick out the piano part by ear).
