    I find it strange The Clash got so much exposure in the states, compared to the relative obscurity of The Jam's stateside career.

    I think it may have been their love of American blues and early rock musicians. There was a greaser, Stray Cats-esque sort of thing going on in the US at the time, and I think that made the Clash appealing.
