Under Leopold II's administration, the Congo Free State became one of the greatest international scandals of the early 20th century. The report of the British Consul Roger Casement led to the arrest and punishment of white officials who had been responsible for killings during a rubber-collecting expedition in 1903.

The loss of life and atrocities inspired literature such as Joseph Conrad's Heart of Darkness, and raised an international outcry. Excess deaths in this period are believed to number up to 10 million.[2] One view is that the forced labour system directly and indirectly eliminated 20% of the population

Many survivers had their hands cut off as the Belgium crown paid a premium for each chopped-off hand. Apparently sometimes Congolese villages attacked neighboring villages to get hands for the Belgiums so they didn't have to have their own hands chopped off.

I know, but a) I'm not the one who brought it up and b) I'm not joking about it. Also, it would never occur to me to tease modernday Belgians about this.

Right. Considering I'm as unpatriotic as they get, no longer live in Belgium and I still responded rather strongly to it, especially considering your previous comments (on which I agreed, btw), I guess humour/offensiveness really is subjective.

Sorry. I was trying to publicly shame Disco for making such a lighthearted comment about the murder of millions of Congolese. It's wasn't my intention to come across as just as lighthearted, rather as sarcastic. I totally understand that this is no fun topic.

Case in point (as you just correctly stated)

No, it's fine, I get where you're coming from. Was sort of amused to find any patriotic feeling in me still left, tbh. And it was too good to pass up - I enjoy irony

You can't shame me into boarding the outrage train. Enjoy wasting your energy being pissed off at everything.
