^ I've been uncertain about starting it. As much as I loved season 1, it traumatized me a little. Maybe I can ease into it with one episode every couple of weeks...

If it helps, the first season was very existentially bleak. This season is more gritty bleak, like "crime drama" bleak. Not really visible blood or bodies at this point, but some people do some violent things to each other (some off-camera).

That's really reassuring, because it was the existential bleakness that got to me last season. (Didn't help that the bleakest character spoke my enneagram 1 language whenever he was being bleak.) Some of the season 2 taglines seemed existential, so I wasn't sure whether that would play out similarly.

It was a good setup. I like where it's going.

What stood out to me:

McAdams' dad basically blew up her spot with the Tsar Bomba. The whole episode could have been his deconstruction of her entire psyche/life on repeat and I would have considered the episode a success.

Everyone is apparently able to drink obscene amounts of alcohol and still arrive safely to their destination.

Heh. I admit, I was kind of shocked that Farrell actually arrived at the closing scene... And Morse is great. I'm really curious to see how all that factors into things.

And how the "sneakers" incident has repercussions. Seriously, didn't he leave a call-in trail a mile long on that, or did he go through any backdoors? He's pretty traceable.

... but I like the characters that were established. I like that McAdams is showing restraint in a part that would be too easy to let run to the extreme.

Why?

I had the opposite reaction. I loved season 1 so much that I cannot possibly ever see it being topped by subsequent seasons.

^that's me. I loved season 1 so much that I have Lowered Expectationsâ„¢ for any subsequent seasons, so I'm pretty sure I'll enjoy this one. I know the AV Club reviewer was disappointed because it lacks that "buddy cop" vibe that the two leads gave the first season, but I think it was a smart move not to go that way again since it would inevitably compare unfavorably to season 1. At least if he goes in a pretty different direction like it seems he has, it'll be apples & oranges.

Although I hope there's SOMETHING for the internet to latch onto and go crazy researching a la the Yellow King this season.

I'm not uncertain about the quality -- I agree with you that season 1 most likely can't be topped. But I'm uncertain about the emotional impact. Like I said, it was traumatizing.

But if Jen is correct and it won't be quite as bleak as season 1, then I'm not as concerned.

Although I hope there's SOMETHING for the internet to latch onto and go crazy researching a la the Yellow King this season.
Totally agree. I love that sort of thing. Part of the reason why I miss "LOST", and why I'm excited for Twin Peaks season 3.

Yes. I like that it already feels different. If it were too thematically similar and felt too parallel to the prior season in terms of structure I think it would have been less successful any way you evaluated it; critically, artistically, suspense-wise, etc. Creating the separation will help this season be its own thing.

We'll see. It seems less based on the eerie Louisiana superstitious vibe (different part of the country), so it seems more economics based. Reminds me of Chinatown in some ways, in terms of the one subplot.

See, I can't help but compare it to AHS -- although AHS uses the same actors (more or less) each season. It's just that even with the location shifts in AHS, I don't think the seasons clearly broke away from each other. Here, I feel like the tone is actually a bit different and can accept season 2 as really a "new" entry under the umbrella of a series name. Which I think is commendable, if they can tell another story that works.

I guess I was curious as to what you felt was traumatizing about it.

Oh, gotcha.

I related a lot to Rust, because his e1 logic made intuitive sense to me. And the result of that was that I sort of got dragged into the pit with him, as the season went on. Didn't help that I binge-watched it in about four days. (Lesson learned.)

Ahh. The best stuff breaks you good though. Maybe that's my 4 wing :)

I relate a bit. What attracted me so much was to see a character embody a worldview I recognized and had gone through at one point, that few permit themselves an understanding of. It was fun for me to swim in that again. I don't think I'll find that again this season, but that's okay.

I like the urban setting of this season.

One quesiton, who is that person Collin Farrel's character broke into the home of wearing a mask and beat up (away from the screen)? I do realize that he is working as the muscle of that casino gangster. Does is have something to do with that/the gangster?

I was a little unclear as well, but it was the reporter who broke the story on whatever Vince has going on with all the developments.

Hey, the guy who directed GoT's "The Gift" and "Hardhome" this past season is directing s2e6. Just thought that was interesting.

I was thinking they should've incorporated Nick Cave in the OST.

Then I find out later that they did. It was in the ending credits.
