I've seen life is beautiful, hasn't heard of intouchables before today but it looks good, i'll check it out.

Hope you'll enjoy it. ;) Did you see the low metascore? I can't believe how critics can be such dicks to foreign movies.

the bulk of the movies, I agree with them placing so high... although a few in there, I was like... ugh.

(All the way through. I've seen parts of many more, but haven't seen those in their entirety.)

183/250.

I would have expected a better list from IMDB.

Well it's a composite of anyone who happens to vote, so there is no standardized criteria for scores aside from personal preference.

I am not a movie person. I don't like watching them most of the time. It's like subjecting myself to an emotional roller coaster that I could otherwise avoid (I do NOT like inciting emotional stress in myself willingly). Most of the time it's friends that want to watch them. Why? It makes no sense. If you're with friends, you should be doing something. Not all mutually staring at the same screen. Worse, if the movies makes me uncomfortable then I have to deal with it around others which makes it WAY worse.

Nope, movies aren't my thing.

For minor victories, I'm just happy The Prestige ranked in well over the crappy The Illusionist.

What are your favorite five documentaries?
In no particular order:

'Guns, germs and steel'
Jared Diamond does an excellent job in avoiding any sort of etnocentrism when trying to find out the reason why some societies thrived, while some haven't changed much in thousands of years. He has expertise in a lot of fields, and his reasoning is very consistent.

'The men who built America'
Some of the wealhtiest businessmen all time (you can check some inflation adjusted ranking to verify that), and also some of the most brilliant scientists all time crossing paths. Tesla, Edison, Ford, JP Morgan, Rockefeller, Andrew Carnegie, and Vanderbilt. It was a time when capitalism was very wild, with no minimum wage, labor rights, antimonopoly laws, etc.

'I shouldn't be alive'
The will to survive is something I find very admirable. Some stories are good, while others are kinda boring. The good ones involve the characters making risky key decisions, while the bad ones mostly involve dumb luck.

'Dogfights'
Former pilots narrating some of their combats, with very good simulations. There used to be a lot of cunning in these fights (seriously, some fights looked like a fast-paced chess game), before technology ruined that. At times, they kinda sound like psychopaths for enjoying killing their enemies so much, but that's part of what made them sucessful. Not for the politically correct.

'Dark matters: Twisted But True'
I think you'll like this one. It covers some ethically questionable experiments that revolutionized science. It has a dark edge, and the narrator sounds like he's narrating an horror movie.

104.

I wouldn't have. This is derived from the viewer voting system, not any kind of expertise, and that's why in so far as there are movies on the list that don't seem to belong there, they heavily bias toward the recent.

This is true, but I wouldn't be expecting IMDB's voting audience to be the same as say, the MTV Movie Awards. If anything, I'd have expected the list to have a geek bias (which it does) but not a box office bias.
