Like, the story borrows elements from the storyline. Ya know?
Sentinels taking over the Earth? Mutants leading a resistance? Political assassination that results in future dystopia?

Somebody going back in time to prevent this timeline from ever happening?

It doesn't appear to stray too far from the comic run.

Either way, I'm tired of superhero movies in general. Four are coming out this summer.
Do we need 4 freakin' superhero movies? I don't think we do.

BUT! If there is a chance to get a definitive large scale X-Men movie (the budget is 250 mil), I'm there.
I'd rather have that then a blatantly disorganized cash-in (ala Amazing Spidey 2).

+1

And don't forget the opportunity to use both the cast.

I just hope mystique would have the same sexiness the original version had.

Wanting Mystique to be "sexy" is exactly what some of my issues are.
The movie version was just some dull-witted, hopped-up, bad-ass sex kitten designed to be every man's wet dream.
So much for "class," that's not the character of Raven Darkholme. If you want titillation, go watch porn with people dressed up as superheroes or something.

... and yeah, while I always wanted to see a decent superhero movie and for so long there was NOTHING worthwhile out there, now there's just a glut. At least a higher percentage are passable if not decent, but ... it's all just product promotion.

Uh, oh. Someone is jelly.

Either way, I think what Riva is saying is that he misses Rebecca Romijn's "femme fatale" Mystique and is hoping they drop Jennifer Lawrence's "confused emo teenager" version. With that I would agree. Mystique was one of the most compelling and iconic aspects of the original movies and I'd dare say she was a VAST improvement upon the comic character.

Her few "big" moments in the original series held MUCH more gravitas than all that by-the-numbers bullshit in First Class.

I don't really remember the Jennifer Lawrence version, and I remember finding Rebecca Romijn boring and predictable... but of course that was years ago... I think I saw the original X1 in the theater.

If you guys can find it in yourselves to enjoy the movie(s), knock yourself out. My only real plan at this point is to watch "The Wolverine" Extended Edition now that it's out on home video and otherwise I'm not really interested in much X-Men stuff despite being an old-time fan of the comic. I typically have hated the casting as well as the treatment for most of the characters, although I did think Fassbender made a decent young Magneto and McAlvoy a decent young Xaxier... but it's telling I can barely remember what the plot of First Class was. Normally if I enjoy a movie, I don't get all hazy on it. I don't even remember Mystique in First Class (it was that insignificant), although I remember the Jennifer Lawrence character in "Like Crazy" and there she was just a secondary character in a flawed movie.

EDIT: OH, I will watch CA2: The Winter Soldier, though. Reviews seem to be through the roof a few weeks out.

Sigh. Look at my miserable existence. Did I really just harsh on the X-Men in favor of freakin' Captian America? Say it ain't so! I never even liked Cap comics.

Wolverine(s) sucked. I did not like that movie.
As for the plot of First Class:

Cuban Missile Crisis, Kevin Bacon wore a helmet, some asshole weirdos cruised around in a submarine, the dude from Wanted ends up in a wheelchair, Hugh Jackman tells the principle cast to go fuck themselves, etc.

I'll see it, I guess. Love my Captain America and stuff.

The most interesting parts in the first three movies were mystiques parts. Dull witted? I don't think so. She had class but was in the line of tac. She didn't have any space to become the decision maker or a central decision maker because she was shadowed by magneto. Considering her powers i think this version was better than the cartoons. Not sure about the comics.

Lolz jelly indeed. Anf if only guys found her and her character and the females couldn't i think it's sad bexause the women are missing out on a lot.

Not every person is a thinker, classy in the line of magneto and she would should appeal to these people.

It's a movie therefore has little time for character development. I think she had a lot of potential for that as it was played by the first actress.

Also i am glad she is hot and appeaal to male desires. I think she was meant to be so probably even in the comics (she was a seductress) but since it is not an adult cartoon she was probably limited in thay capacity.

Also i'm sure some of the male characters appeal to the women and are meant to do so.

Wolverine
Cyclops
Gambit - my sister was a huge fan
Ice man - probably to teens

Yes these were exactly my thoughts. The second version was so annoying and desperate.

Also i agree on her badassery.

You were just jelly.

The wolverine 1 sucked. The second movie was really good but it didnt have a henchman in the capacity mystique was in the first movies.

However he nemesis in the wolberine 2 was a really good surprise.

Bump.

Movie officially out tomorrow, might show tonight? 91% on RT currently.

Found a great article about the comic book version of the story and how it really shook up the industry. That's how I felt, when I read it for the first time. A few decades later, it might seem old hat, but back then it was very different.

The Legacy of X-Men

Also has some page panels! :)

Even if 20th Century Fox's wildest technicolor dreams come true and X-Men: Days of Future Past racks up critical acclaim and a billion dollars in worldwide gross, it's doubtful that anyone will describe it as revolutionary. In 2014, there's nothing groundbreaking about an action story featuring time travel, dystopian futures, and nasty robots.

But in early 1981, the pop-culture landscape was different. Over the course of just two issues of Uncanny X-Men — only 44 pages total — the original "Days of Future Past" story line changed the game and told a tale like nothing fans had seen before. Indeed, it's probably one of the most influential comics stories ever told.

"It shook people up when they read it," said comics historian Sean Howe, author of Marvel Comics: The Untold Story. "There was nothing to gird you, no compass to help you out."

Comics journalist Heidi MacDonald can still recall the day she picked the first issue up from a newsstand: "I was standing there with trembling hands, looking at the cover. And then you opened it up, and you were immersed."

MacDonald wasn't the only one who was stunned by the cover image on the first issue of the story, Uncanny X-Men No. 141. The illustration, done by series artist John Byrne, is one of the most famous — and imitated — comics covers ever published. Wolverine and a brunette woman stand in a pile of rubble, backs to a wall, staring toward the reader. They're trapped in some kind of searchlight. Wolverine is, for some reason, gray-haired and aged. Behind them is an enormous poster with the faces of various X-Men, obscured by red banners reading "SLAIN" or "APPREHENDED."...

... and yes, I still have my original copy. :)

I watched it and loved it. Can't believe people haven't commented much on it.

Is probably the best of the franchise. It has a story, focuses on the main characters while having 'plenty' of action time for the minor characters.

Amazing it was.

I went to see it twice, once with my brother and once with a friend. I really did enjoy it, surprisingly, but then my expectations were low.

I finally watched it on home 3D.

Summary of my experience: Looking at it as derived from the comics, I didn't really get much out of it (kind of like my feeling with much of Peter Jackson's LotR stuff), I had to divorce myself from the source. However, when I looked at it as its own entity happening to "do a riff" based loosely on some familiar storylines and characters, all on its own terms, it was enjoyable enough. [For comparison, I consider "Cap America II: The Winter Soldier" to be a movie that is both excellent on its own terms AND is true to the source comic.] However, considering the hit-or-miss nature of the X-Men movie sequence, this is one of the better ones.

I think Magneto was the closest to what I know of the comic. Fassbender does an excellent job. And I guess McAvoy / Stewart both do a decent job as Xavier. The rest (especially the secondaries, like all the future X-men who die repeatedly), I could take or leave; I really felt nothing with any of that. But Magneto really does come off very much like the comic in that time period + as a total badass; his interaction with the stadium (among other things) was incredible. I remember feeling that way about "First Class" as well.

My favorite scene ends up being very much what I've seen others comment on: "Time in a Bottle," Quicksilver down in the bowels of the Pentagon. I'm not really a fan of Singer, but I think he did a lot with that sequence that resonated and really sticks in your head. Very creative, very fun, very inventive, and finally makes a "speedster" character actually seem interesting and versatile.
