The first self-saving Disney Princess gets a sexier, more feminine make-over.

When the male ideal is about being adventurous and ambitious, and the female ideal is about being skinny, something's wrong.

And, in "Brave" she was the male ideal, and at first it went over badly. Seems not a lot has changed in some corners.

That's a different conversation. Probably a worthy one too, but the one here is that she was fine the way she was before, so why amp it up? She wasn't a "classic" beauty on the outside, but she was never supposed to be about her looks or even about her being a girl (other than how she "failed" at being one). That was the point of the movie, and why I think it's bugging some people.

Hahaha! You think Disney believes in the shit they peddle?

M-O-N-E-Y. Replaces M-I-C-K-E-Y M-O-U-S-E.

All that matters.

In the redesign, she has a firmer and more glamorous figure along with refined features designed to be striking.
Which means, you're more likely to SEE her.

More likely to see=more likely to BUY.

When the male ideal is about being adventurous and ambitious, and the female ideal is about being skinny, something's wrong.

I know! It's fucked up, isn't it?
But I'll be damned if it doesn't move units.

And, this takes away from why people have a reason to be annoyed how? It's not news. Besides, it's not like they went BROKE with her the way she was before.

Exactly. What kind of shitty princess is that? Let's strip all that away and replace it with pretty.

Don't forget the dress. My god, don't ever forget the dress.

I actually tend to agree with you on this point, one of the reasons I reject Disney almost automatically is because of this, because what they're doing is so glaringly commercial and the intent is so clear to me to not be one that is authentic or genuine (as it once was 100 years ago when Steamboat Mickey came upon the scene; I do think it was somebody's ideals once, their dream and something creative...)

But so was Santa Monica pier once, apparently, it was the end of route 66, it once stood for something, and to some people it still does, the buskers and street performers, but really you see a lot more local business and soul in Venice Beach and a lot more of emphasis on money and commercialism on the Santa Monica Pier and 3rd Street Prominade than you do on the Venice Beach walk.

When I'm in Venice Beach I still feel like I could be back in Venice in the 1960s, and when I'm on the Santa Monica pier, I feel like I could be in an American Express commercial.

For that reason though I love Santa Monica as a clean, green city, I actually prefer Venice for its soul and overall intent to not be a hollow clanging gong of corporate shills.

I'm totally off topic here, but Disney is kind of like Santa Monica. It has a lot of money, and good things obviously come of it, but the intent there is clearly money and commercialism.

And Venice beach is more like an independent film.

Honestly, I think that drawing with all of them had the potential to be so badass. Had they kept them all the way they were when kids fell in love with them, personality enhanced instead, it could have been powerful and beautiful. I prefer this one:

As DOD said their purpose is to make money and money is all about proper marketing unless it's a monopoly. Don't forget it's because of proper marketing people are concerned about the character in the first place. So I wouldn't blame them because their purpose is to sell. Anyway I believe it is a marketing failure 'if the original version was a success' (I'm not a little girl so I wouldn't know). Maybe not. Maybe it would sell more.

Ironically I actually liked the original version more.

I loved Disney's Robin Hood and The Jungle Book. I slept with a stuffed Balloo for years. I wish I knew what happened to him.

Don just read over my shoulder and is accusing me of calling him names.

No. First, I refuse. and Second. She was being saved left and right.

Then technically, Merida is a Pixar princess if Princess Leia is to remain a Lucasfilm princess.

Okay, so maybe in '77 she was more played as the damsel in distress (but a comparatively bad-ass damsel in distress), but after she discovered Luke Skywalker was a little short for a stormtrooper, she ended up saving everyone else (including herself).

No, they're not. At all. If anything it's more, "WTF... AGAIN??" And, letting Disney know where they stand.

Precisely. It isn't surprising at all, just irritating. I don't understand why whenever someone has an emotional reaction to a situation they're somehow surprised as well.

Gotta love the classic thinking traps.

I think this is the entire point though--the movie was very successful with the audience it was targeting. It didn't require any changes, it did not bomb.

Something VERY BAD happened to Disney in the 90s. I just remember blindly hating pretty much everything they've put out since then, thinking it was infantile and commercial and insulting.

You might be interested in this documentary about what happened to Disney around that time:
