I went to go see Iron Man 3 on Saturday, and I was overjoyed to finally see Tony Stark finally face off against his arch nemesis: The Mandarin. The Mandarin was in my opinion, one of the most bad ass villains of all time in the Marvel Comics series and I was really looking forward to seeing him being brought to life on the big screen. The Mandarin is amazing: he is an amazing martial artist, he was a brilliant NTJ strategist, was a scientist, and let's not forget his bad ass 10 rings that are the bread and butter of his power. Oh yes, the 10 rings. The Mandarin found 10 rings in an alien spaceship that gave him 10 incredible powers. These powers included: the ability to create and manipulate ice like Iceman in the X Men, mind control, the ability to shoot lightning, the ability to shoot balls of fire, the ability to manipulate light, he could create a gravitational field, he could levitate, he could create illusions, could manipulate dark energy, had the power to completely disintegrate someone, could manipulate air, could shoot poison blasts, and could create poisonous gas. Damn that's a lot of cool powers!
However, in the movie, we didn't see any of this in the Mandarin. In fact, the Mandarin, Tony Stark's arch nemesis was reduced to just a "paid actor". When I saw this I was completely outraged. This was literally the equivalent of taking "The Joker" and making him just a fake character in the Batman movies. I literally felt ripped off when I walked out of the movie. I felt like this was the ultimate betrayal of Marvel fans, and I felt like this just slapped us all in the face. The worst part, is that it appears that the reason that "The Mandarin" was not portrayed correctly in this movie is because he perpetuated several Chinese Stereotypes. When, I found this out I was fucking pissed! I mean, if they felt like the Mandarin offended too many people, then why didn't they just keep their set up that they had in the beginning of the movie and make him a Jihad extremist like Osama Bin Laden: he could have still been a master strategist, he could have still found the rings, could have still had badass powers, could have still been a genius scientist, and it would have saved the movie in my opinion. However, instead we got a complete butchery of a movie thanks to political correctness.
