The popularity of the book, Fifty Shades of Grey, is absolutely enormous across many cultures. And the movie from the book has sell out audiences of women across the globe.

This book and movie speaks to what has been hidden in the psyche of women for ages.

Ask yourself, what man will admit he regularly uses pornography, so how can we expect women to be any different?

To be fair, she was a Twilight fan which speaks volumes for where she's at emotionally, mentally, and in terms of mastery of the English language. So the bar was set pretty low to begin with in terms of what she was aspiring to, and she failed to achieve even that.

I thought it was a hoot that

a) the male lead was orphaned at age 4, then sexually molested; but still had it together enough to become a billionaire (with a *b* not an *m*) by age 27.
b) a man that rich (== busy) would allow an interview with the friend/roommate of a designated interviewer
c) a man that rich and good-looking would magically be smitten by an inexperienced 21-year-old
d) he would then somehow allow himself to be healed and tamed by getting to do BDSM with her

And the writing could win several Bulwer-Lytton awards ("...It was a dark and stormy night.")

It's not just sexual fantasy, it's wishful thinking! (emo-romantic porn, kind of like Phantom of the Opera meets Beauty and the Beast).

I basically completely agree with what you said here on this subject. I (admittedly halfheartedly, because a friend wanted me to) picked up the book and got through the first chapter. I didn't want to keep going and I didn't. It was ridiculous. I've known people who are into the dom/sub stuff (primarily online...2 RL friends I am 95% sure about...). I am a pretty vanilla girl, so I have a "don't ask, don't tell" policy with them. From the bit I do know, it seems that Fifty Shades of Grey basically makes a mockery of this lifestyle/sexual proclivity/whatever you want to call it.

Also, the writing was kinda bad.

So it seems EVERYONE is talking about these fifty shades books, so I felt it would be rude not to check them out. Currently flying through the first one. Although they are no great work of literature I am finding myself addicted to the sex.

I am loving this book (ok so everytime I read 'my inner goddess' I cringe but I'm willing to forgive that) but then I love sex. I'm curious to know why this particular work of erotica has such universal appeal?

I haven't read them. I think it's fine, it's definitely not the worst story out there based on the quotes. People complain a lot about whether it's creep or not, but the reality is people are creepy and this girl's allowed to fantasize about being involved with a creep that would never work IRL.

As far as why it went huge. My theory is two fold: It was a Twilight fanfic to start out with, and that was just peaking in popularity too. And secondly, it had an audience. Adults wanted more erotic things out of Twilight than they got. 50 Shades was a convenient plug that was audacious, extreme, but seriously still prude and restrained in its own way (no super graphic details about bodily parts vs how she felt during those parts doing their things) erotic fiction. There really hasn't been amazing inserts of erotica that I can recall besides the occasional scene from an Anne Rice book. So, even though this wasn't amazing, it was well timed and had everything those audiences were looking for. Something that would never be real, was perfect in it's own world and just far enough removed from reality that soccer moms and book clubs could giggle about it and go on about their day. Easy read, no serious involvement, what else can a gal ask for. (A lot more.)

My friend gave me the first book to borrow saying that it was the best book she had ever read. I tried to read it because, well I mean why not -free book, and just found myself getting closer and closer to wanting to jump in the book and slap some sort of sense into the main character(the woman). Seriously, I had to stop reading.

They introduce us to this woman, one who basically is just knocked down and flown about by any strong breeze, and shove her into a situation that she obviously has no hope of ever getting out of. Because apparently the will of everyone around her just overrides any sort of glimmer of a rational thought. This book basically attemts to portray all women as being at the emotional level of a child, and then plays off of that lowered level of inhibition to reshape how women see the world around them. There is alot more I would say about it, but it would be an essay.

And the book wasn't even that good anyway
