Fairy tales moving to popular film

It's really on a rise in the movie studios isn't it? I wonder what sparked this trend. I'm thrilled about it on the whole, although I'm sure I'll have some criticisms for the filmmaking. I've yet to see Snow White and the Huntsman. What did you guys think?

What sparked the trend is Hollywood mining every instance of pre-packaged story they can, much like all the movies the past few decades based on old TV shows.... and even more bizarrely, board games.
