Recommendations please -- more movies with the feel of the 'angsty' oppressed?

I've been exploring my darker side and getting in touch with my inner anger lately, and suddenly I find myself, for the first time in my life, wanting to listen to rap music with offensive lyrics and watch violent movies.

To educate myself, I watched 8 Mile, which I liked quite a bit. I know it's very toned-down and not a realistic portrayal of the ghetto, but I liked the gloomy, oppressed feel of the neighborhood and the whole 'life sucks, I'm stuck in the rut' feel.

I've tried Jinni and nanocrowd for recommendations, and while they gave a lot of interesting suggestions, the descriptions and keywords they used were not exactly spot-on on what I'm looking for. I'm going to check out "Hustle & Flow" and "The Fighter" anyway.

Basically, here are a few things I'd like in the movie:
- an oppressive feel, especially of a run-down neighborhood, working class life
- no help from the system and the cops are just another gang
- strong language
- sense of lurking danger
- feeling lost
- constant stress as life is always trying to screw you over
- human integrity amidst all this and a glimmer of hope
- preferably from a youth's point of view
- scenes like thrashing your apartment, family members yelling at each other, shoving and brandishing guns, breaking down and crying in the bathroom, etc.

BUT
- nothing too violent or heavy or depressing please (no killing innocent children, gruesome torture scenes, becoming paralyzed for life, etc., and especially definitely not 'violence for fun')

Movies with a somewhat similar feel include Training Day and Infernal Affairs (the original Hong Kong version of The Departed). Eastern Promises is somewhat similar, but a bit too 'organized', realistic and heavy. All the street dance movies are way too fluffy.

So, any thoughts?

If nothing matches, something with realistic youth angst with great acting that in the end doesn't get smoothed over by the loving hands of society/parents/mentor will be ok too.

I hope someone knows what I'm talking about

Thanks in advance!

I don't think it is healthy for you to go there for too long. Maybe give yourself a week of this then let it go. My recommendations:

American Beauty
Fargo
Old Boy
Chinatown
L.A. Confidential
8mm
Y Tú Mama Tambien
Chungking Express

I agree. I think I just had a terrible work week and was extremely depressed for a few days. I'm just looking for an outlet for all the negative emotions. Thanks

American Beauty Seen it.
Fargo I remember I gave it a go when I was a kid and it kinda went over my head. Looks good though!
Old Boy Seen it. That's one messed-up movie
Chinatown
L.A. Confidential This one's definitely going on my list!
8mm Seen it.
Y Tú Mama Tambien Heard interesting things about this. I'll check it out.
Chungking Express Loved this one!

Great suggestions!

Just checked out those movies -- sounds like awesome recommendations! I haven't see any of it except for Trainspotting, which I enjoyed a lot. Thanks!

I saw the first one but not the second. (When it came out the parents 'censored' it because they thought I was too young and I never got a chance to see it ) Actually this reminds me of Pen-ek's "Last Life in the Universe" -- an extremely underrated piece of art ^^

Wow, never heard of these before. They will be great to 'stretch' the genre I'm watching :)

Man Bites Dog
Bad Lieutenant (the harvey keitel version)
Bully (2001)
Thanks! I just watched the trailer of "Bully" on YouTube after failing to find it on Jinni -- and... whoa, true story?

You people are great! Thanks a lot!

have you seen that? with ray macdonald. and the recent
one Ploy - พลอย also with Mew Lalita. very very good.

my guilty pleasure is Khumphaphan - กุมภาพันธ์
with Chakrit heehee.

The Wire...

Also was gonna post this. So... that's four. It's always worthwhile to note that new inductees of the Wire sometimes need three or four episodes to start to get into it. That was true of me, and I now consider in the best television series I've ever seen (and re-watched the whole thing at least three or four times).

Some good suggestion already. I'm not sure how literally to interpret your criteria so I separated them into categories. Here's my suggestions:

Gritty urban realism/working class struggles/crime/conflict with authority
Un Prophete
Narc
Goodfellas (perhaps a bit violent?)
Heat
Gone Baby Gone
The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford
In the Heat of the Night
Capote*
Three Kings
Cool Hand Luke
In the Name of the Father
Silkwood
No Country for Old Men
The Town

Intense family conflict/existential issues/dark and tense inner struggles
There Will Be Blood
Heavenly Creatures
In My Father's Den
Memento*
The Lives of Others*
Pan's Labyrinth*
Downfall
Gattaca*
The Hours (perhaps a bit depressing and heavy)
Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf
The Night of the Hunter

* Kinda fit in both categories
