    Default Mission Impossible 4

Got my movie tickets yesterday, for a Wednesday 5pm showing. It's opening, though, the prior night (tonight) at 8:15pm and 10:30pm or so.

Considering it's a worknight, I just didn't even bother with it.

I've been waiting to see this movie for awhile, considering I thought MI3 was pretty amazing, and I'm a big Brad Bird and JJ Abrams fan.

Looks like Rotten Tomatoes agrees -- I think it's up to 95% fresh now. Although one of the local reviewers gave only 2.5 stars (out of 4) and criticized Bird heavily in his review; it felt more like a kneejerk response to me, where if everyone likes a film, you have to find something to criticize about it in order to seem different.

Probably Shame (Michael Fassbender) is higher quality in terms of human drama, but I really am fond of my "smart" action pics.

    I posted my thoughts here.

They're covering the fx work in the next Cinefex. The stuff done on the tower in Dubai was real but involved extensive wire removal.

One of less successful fx sequences was the bombing of the Kremlin; digital smoke is still not yet perfected. 650 CG fx shots total. Not quite CGI porn, but still sizeable.

And Michael Giacchino's cultural music tracks (male choir for the Russia sequences, orgasmic female choir for the India sequences, etc.) are about the campiest renditions of such music I've ever heard, but still enjoyable.

And dammit, I want my extended chick fight!!! Without giving much away, it was the biggest anticlimactic letdown since...the final showdown between Cruise and Capote in M:I-3.

BTW, remember when Philip Seymour Hoffman was in Twister?

... actually, I found it rather amusing how that showdown ended, and it was even foreshadowed a bit.

[The movie had more character drama mixed into the action.]

If you want bombasticness, go back to MI2 and enjoy all the explosions.

EDIT: I see you also tried to view Dark Knight as an action movie. It's my favorite Batman ever.... but that's because I see more as a character drama and philosophical comparison statement with a lot of action sequences, not an action picture.

I actually hated M:I-2. Well, maybe hate is a strong word, but it was my least favorite. Too many unintentionally funny slow-mo shots (The Matrix was very popular back then).

And I enjoyed M:I-3 up until that point.

Mission Impossible 2 cracks me up because I'm a big fan of Moulin Rouge ... and one of the heavies that Ethan has to fight in MI2 plays the wussy, snivelling rat-faced Duke in the other movie. Hilarious, talk about a "wtf" moment.

Not sure, but I'm talking about Richard Roxburgh. He was in Sanctum too.

EDIT: Well, look at that... you're exactly right.

I plan on seeing it, despite the mediocre-looking trailer. The positive reviews are reassuring; many are claiming that it's the best MI so far. I was a fan of the first one, didn't like the second, and was indifferent about the last one.

I'm excited about this one. Between the trailer and Brad Bird making his feature debut, I'm sold. I also still really enjoy Tom Cruise, all the real life stuff notwithstanding.

Damn, you had me at Brad Bird.

    Wait, that doesn't sound right.
