The Gift of Failure: How the Best Parents Learn to Let Go so their Children can Succeed

In the second phase of his experiment, Harlow gave half of the monkeys a raisin as a reward for opening the locks. The monkeys were quite good at opening the locks, so surely, given a reward, they would open them even faster, right? Nope. The monkeys who received raisins actually opened the locks more slowly, and with less frequency, than they did when no reward was offered. Something about the extrinsic reward interfered with their intrinsic motivation and threw them off their game (or latch, in this case).

Great tips on parenting in this one.

The Darker Edge of Desire. Edited by: Mitzi Szereto

"Love, passion and sex . . . it’s all here in Darker Edge of Desire. Gothic literature has always possessed a dark attraction ripe with the promise of the forbidden and the sensual. In Darker Edge of Desire, Mitzi Szereto takes the sexualized Gothic and ratchets it up a few notches into the danger zone, opening a door into the darker side of lust and love that only the courageous dare to venture through. Venturing even farther into the world of mystery and romance than she did in the critically acclaimed Red Velvet and Absinthe, Szereto creates an atmosphere with a distinct Gothic flavor where we explore our more forbidden desires. In these tales, love and lust (and kink!) know no boundaries, and all nature of beings ―vampires, werewolves, shape shifters, ghosts, and succubae ― abound. Tread carefully, danger and desire lie ahead!" -Synopsis

The Shack

Its pretty decent so far but I do have some worries that it might reach a bit too far religiously and then sort of fly off that handle into something that stretches too far away from like... acrually supporting the plot.

But Im only 20% in and so what do I know? It could go anywhere really...

Freedom from Disease by Peter Morgan Kash, et al. The authors believe that insulin resistance is the cause of many of the major chronic diseases like obesity, metabolic syndrome, diabetes, autism, and Alzheimer's Disease. This is an excellent book on metabolic syndrome.

The role of transcription factors and their effect on our genes disabuses us of one of the more popular cultural beliefs, which is that genes are the ultimate arbiters of our fate. In reality, genes are more like instruments in a grand symphony, each one waiting for the moment when the maestro will point the baton and call forth its music. Genes determine a great deal of our underlying nature, but transcription factors - the cellular maestros - are triggering our genes or keeping them quiet. The delicate virtuosity with which our cells are able to express each relevant gene - and do it at just the right moment - determines our health, and indeed our fate.

The guy's right about all of that.

What causes the insulin resistance though?

It can be a consequence of some sorts of poisoning and even the body's own resistance if it is exposed to insulin poisoning, there's been a couple of cases of this in the UK, and what are you going to do? Ban the insulin dependent from access to their drugs? A lot of people dont give over enough thought to the reality of this substance being available and some of the people, not all of them, who are regular insulin users are so because they've ruined their health with bad, even criminal, self abuse and being capable of that they'll have no problem abusing others likewise.

Just finished reading Solaris by Stanislaw Lem.

It depicts humanity as a creature forever committed to exposing the unintelligible and the senseless. Impotent in their attempts to understand what is within, humanity flies to the ends of the universe to obtain knowledge of the without. Ultimately, they reach an outer wall of intelligibility: An oceanic super-organism, a fantastic creature which embodies everything that eludes understanding. All attempts to understand this creature turn out to be fruitless, and the creature shines a mirror back at them, reflecting to them the inner wall which they are attempting to run away from. It is almost a gesture of mockery.

Kas. Thanks for the recommendation. It was a great read.

Next on the list is "In the dust of this planet" by Eugene Thacker.

Primarily over-eating, especially of calorie-rich processed foods. When the bloodstream is flooded with glucose from a meal, the body tries to sequester the glucose inside cells to prevent water leakage via osmotic pressure from the cells to the blood. Insulin signals cells to soak up the glucose, but once the cells are full, they no longer want to take in any additional glucose, so they become resistant to the insulin. When this happens frequently, cells no longer respond to insulin like they used to so higher levels of insulin are required.

The solution is to exercise and to cut down on the calories; exercise and caloric restriction restores insulin sensitivity by depleting cells of their glucose stores.

I've just finished "The Illustrated Guide to the Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up" by Marie Kondo. I got it from my father (subtle suggestion).

Fun to read, but far too spiritual to me- hugging clothes to make sure if they make you happy? complimenting screwdriver? Mm-hmm
