Is the engine that different? I thought it might've shared more technology with it than not.

I'm not the biggest fan of orcs and elves either (but I do like a lot of fantasy stuff). What I'm really a fan of though is chopping off heads. Guns are boring.

How is the leveling in this game? The one thing that really upset me about Oblivion was that leveling up your "preferred" skills was actually detrimental to becoming a badass.

There's no little screen that asks you to pick a class, so you can pretty much just level up whatever skills you want without any added weighting.

Yeah, it's a completely new engine. It looks better, it runs smother, and there are a lot of significant changes to the UI. There are more physics in play in the game world as well, making combat feel a lot meatier and (to use a vastly overused word) visceral.

The game comes with copious amounts head-chopping, you'll also be glad to know.

As Orangey said, there are no classes this time around. The levelling itself has been seriously overhauled, and streamlined significantly from Oblivion. You can now level up using whatever skills you want, but every skill has it's own talent tree of sorts.

The more points you have in a particular skill, the better the "perks" you can unlock for those skills. These give you completely unique abilities, such as an archery skill that slows down time and improves your chances or critical hits with a bow and arrow, or an armour skill that allow you to avoid damage 10% of the time.

To get the best abilities though, you have to specialise, so even without a dedicated class system, you'll still find yourself molding your character into your own personalised and very specific class.

All I know is that I want this game so bad. But I'm going to wait for Christmas to get it (by then the CS will be released along with the first patch, I'm sure...plus I need a little more RAM to run it on the settings I'd like to use). Oblivion was one of my favorite "fallback" games. I've returned to it again and again over the course of 3 years and have modded it to death. So, I can't wait to play this one. I've been watching the IGN gameplay stuff, and I just keep drooling over how pretty everything is and how much potential for role playing I see. Already, I'm thinking that the first thing I'll do before I even start up the game is make a mod where I can place crafting stations, bedrolls, and other camp objects at will and do the whole travelling nomad thing.

I'm thinking of specializing in archery, alchemy, sneak, speech, and possibly smithing. I definitely want to rock some of those rune spells and set up traps. Or I might not touch magic at all and use shouts as my "magic". I dunno. I'm just all excited. It looks soooo cool. I want to go everywhere and see everything!

I see. I wasn't sure how much it was an improvement over Fallout. It does feel better than Oblivion though. Not quite the visceral feeling of playing a warrior in Dragon Age II (or some action titles), but still cool.

If nothing else, it's a hell of a lot less buggy.

It's not exactly action-y. It's more like a tweaked morrowind. You'd probably like it more than me FDG.
