Genova

I've just come out of the movie, "Genova". It is quite a nice movie and has very interesting scenes of the town Genova in Italy.

But the scary thing is that when I got home I typed, "Genova", into Google Earth and in a flash I am viewing these very same streets I saw in the movie. And I am viewing them at ground level. Amazing.

In fact if you knew my address you could look right in my front door from ground level. Amazing and scary. How do they do this?

The Long, Hot Summer
Paul Newman, Joanne Woodward, and Orson Wells in a movie based on William Faulkner's stories? What could go wrong? Nothing really. The whole thing simmers without boiling over. When accused barn burner and bad boy Newman rolls into the southern town controlled by corrupt Orson I expect a lot more fireworks. The romance never really gets going either. Still, fairly enjoyable.

The Curious Case of Benjamin Button
People compared this to Forrest Gump, and I see why. Brad Pitt goes skipping through history while aging backwards. Cate Blanchett is great, but this isn't quite a David Fincher movie, no matter how excellent the aging SFX are. Again, it doesn't suck, but I want more.
Recommended.

Adventureland
Jesse Eisenberg plays a college student (stealing a good role from Michael Cera for once) whose plans fall through forcing him to work at the local amusement park for the summer. He finds himself falling for a co-worker (Kristen Stewart) not realizing she's involved with an older married worker (Ryan Reynolds). Set in the 80s, this movie had a better soundtrack than any movie actually released in the 80s. I thought this would be more of a comedy as two SNL players have supporting roles, and while there are some funny scenes, instead this is a great little coming of age story.
Highly Recommended.

The Queen
Helen Mirren is a great actress and gets the role of a decade playing Queen Elizabeth II set in the week following Princess Diana's death. Not being a Royal Family groupie or British, I never got understood what went on back then. In some ways, even despite this great film, I still don't. Michael Sheen has recently made a career out of playing Tony Blair, and you begin to admire his Blair (no idea how accurate it is).
Highly Recommended.

Rachel Getting Married
Anne Hathaway is a woman fresh out of rehab to attend her sister's wedding. She's great, but the rest of the film... I always watch the deleted scenes, but not this time. There was no point to many of the scenes in the actual movie. One with rehersal dinner speeches kept going on and on and on.
No Recommendation.

State of Play
A Washinton D.C. newspaper reporter (Russell Crowe) is investigating a seemingly drug-related shooting while his old friend in Congress (Ben Affleck) is dealing with the death of his mistress and the public unveiling of their affair. A newspaper blogger (Rachel McAdams) and the editor (awesome Helen Mirren again) begin to squeeze him to provide some access to his old friend, esp. when it appears that the woman may have been murdered. Some people don't like these type of thrillers, but this is more true-to-life than guns-n-explosions that make the money today. This is a very good and well made movie that I only wish happened more often.
Highly Recommended.

Now for the horror films!

Jeepers Creepers 2
I enjoyed the first one, a good little horror film (Justin Long's first break) that was scary and exciting. As usual, the sequel is a step down, dumber and not as frightening.
No Recommendation.

Monkey Shines
One of those 80s horror movies I never got around to seeing. Man is crippled, given a "helper" monkey to make life easier, but the monkey has been given experimental drugs that bond him to the man and the monkey begins to carry out his darkest wishes. Needed to be much scarier.
No Recommendation.

Joy Ride
Two brothers (Paul Walker and the always snarky Steve Zahn) are driving through the West to pick up a girl (Leelee Sobieski - whose nipples were on display more than anything I've seen since Friends went off the air) and on the way decide to mess with a trucker via CB. Who, of course, turns out to be a psycho. Scary and fun.
Recommended.

Dog Soldiers
Oso recommended this one last year where British soldiers are participating in an exercise in Scotland and run into a band of werewolves who... wait a minute! I've seen this movie before! Only it was called Aliens and is one of my favorite movies ever! I mean they are so much alike, right down to the "short controlled bursts" line of dialogue! Oh well, at least there was no Queen (alien not the band) at the end, they could only rip off a classic movie so much. Gory and fun.
Recommended.

The Changeling
Good haunted house movies no longer exist, thanks to CGI throwing shit in the audience's face. Is there anything creepier than a ball bouncing down some stairs? Not if you're a composer (George C. Scott) living alone in a giant mansion after the deaths of his wife and child. And guess what? It seems a child died long ago under similar circumstances at the house too! The creepy factor peaks with the medium's visit and then slowly receeds as the mystery unfolds to the conclusion. A worthy entry in the horror genre anyway.

2012 or the Never Ending Conversation?

Should I go and see 2012?

I mean it is a disaster movie so will it make me prone to disaster?

And of course my head tells me it is a Mayan myth, but once they get me in the theatre, I will believe anything I see.

Don't you think there is something odd about me in that I like disaster movies, and this is a real catastrophe.

It's just that everyone else likes disaster movies.

Even the Bible likes disasters as the last Book in the Bible is Revelations and it is all about the end of the world.

And 2012 is all about the end of the world.

Of course the Bible is teleological and tells a story with a beginning a middle and an end.

The Bible is not circular like the Bhagavad Gita with its eternal return.

No, the Bible comes to an end, like any good book.

Yes, the Bible is teleological like any book.

And interestingly the Bible is unlike the the telegraph, the telephone or the television.

So the Bible is teleological but is not telegraphic, telephonic or televisual.

So the Bible comes to an end but the telegraph, the telephone and the television keep on repeating, going round and round and never coming to an end.

The Bible ends on a disaster story while the telegraph, telephone and television are a never ending conversation - just like Typology Central.

So tell me, do you think 2012 will spoil me for our never ending conversation, or should I prepare my soul for the final judgement at the end of the world?

And just remember, if you stop talking to me, our world will come to an end.

Screen shot! Aww.

There's lots of light hearted banter in this film. I love Mad Martigan's smartassery.

Lost Highway. A David Lynch film I watch every so often about a guy (Bill Pullman) who murders his wife (Patricia Arquette) after finding out she’s messing around with a sleazy porn director. He then enters a fugue state that literally changes both his identity and external reality, trapping him in a time loop (the “Lost Highway”). As a bonus, there’s a scene that should be required viewing for every tailgater.

Play Misty For Me. The first film Clint Eastwood directed, in which he plays a dj who has a fling with a fan and finds out she’s a psycho. Eastwood’s dj is maddeningly passive, a far cry from Dirty Harry. It’s a pretty decent movie, with a strong 70s ambience and period details, made long before Misery and all its clones. Also features breathtaking cinematography of the Northern California coast.

The Twilight Saga: New Moon

I've just come from, "The Twilight Saga: New Moon".

It's a good movie because millions of dollars have been spent on it. But the acting is wooden. Often the characters look like cartoon characters who only move their mouths.

But above all it is a projection of the fantasies of adolescent girls.

And remember these are the fantasies of adolescents emotionally and financially dependent on their parents.

So I was surprised to find a large part of the audience was middle-aged women. And these were women who were enthusiastically projecting onto the screen all their unresolved adolescent fantasies.

But of course these are women who are still emotionally and financially dependent. But this time not on their parents but on their partner. All they have done is transfer all their dependence from their parents to their partner. So their adolescent fantasies have never been tested against reality. So their fantasies are just as fresh today as they were 20, 30 or 40 years ago.

And this explains why all women's magazines have an astrology section at the back. Astrology enables dependent women to indulge their fantasies without any contact with reality.

And this is the attraction of MBTI. It enables dependent adolescents and dependent women to indulge their fantasies without any reality testing.

And when dependent adolescents or dependent women are brought into contact with reality, it is like the shock of suddenly being woken from a dream - it is not welcome at all.

Arsenic and Old Lace(1944)-ridiculous but funny movie. the things that are said are absolutely absurd but are said with a straight face and that's what makes it awesome.

I'm watching Real Life: I don't trust my partner on MTV.

It's so frustrating!

This one girl works full time and goes to school full time and her loser boyfriend just plays video games at home asking for money all the time and he takes girls out to dinner & a movie with her money and cheats on her!

GRRRR!

The Sung Mass

I've just attended a sung mass at the cathedral in Manuka.

The sung mass must be an almost perfect trance induction, perfected over two thousand years by the finest musicians and poets.

And as we slipped into the trance of the sung mass, our critical faculties, one by one, went peacefully to sleep until our disbelief was suspended and we entered into our imagination.

And at this point, like a good poem, the mass was being fully imagined by the whole congregation.

And at the deepest point, and given wholly over to our imaginations, magic occurs and there is no separation between the word and reality.

And at the deepest point of the mass, where we are completely suggestible, a suggestion is made by the priest. And the suggestion was, "Peace".

And slowly and gently we arise from the deepest point of peace, and start to move back into the world, refreshed and relaxed.

Just watched Funny People. It was excellent. One of the best movies I've seen recently. I liked that it didn't hit too many "false notes."
