Love this movie.

Ohh! I love that movie.

There's a seafood restaurant 10 mins down the road from my place in FL called Starfish.and reminds me every time because it's where the lawyer meets with Finnegan and his father to tell them Finn gets to go live and be an artist in New York. The mansion where the old lady lives is the Ca d' Zan on Sarasota Bay and they made it to look all overgrown and run-down for the movie but it's really nice. They do lots of weddings there. :). Fun fact Friday.

I got back from seeing Battleship today. The best way I can describe it is Transformers being eaten and coming out the other end. Literally. The insanely detailed robots have been digested into insanely detailed yo-yos. And it appears the human side of things suffered the same fate as the robots. Where in the first Transformers, the human character development, while superficial, was surprisingly entertaining. We get the same thing with Battleship, minus the entertainment.

As for the actual fx, they were great from a technical standpoint, but it's sad that ILM is the only visual fx facility that I know of that created, in addition to photorealistic dinosaurs dated back to 1993, digital shit -- first CG dewback shit in The Phantom Menace and now Transformer shit. Even sadder is when they actually put an effort in actually making shit look good. I really didn't have a problem with the shots of the alien at the end that received criticism, what I had a problem with were the constant and pointless slow-motion scenes, made worse with constantly changing camera speed in the same shot that I thought would only be in the trailers. There is one shot where an explosion is reversed for a second...what was the point?

Perhaps the worst part of the movie is never getting to learn more about the aliens. None of the characters even get to even explore the alien ships on the inside, and we don't really get to understand their motivations. What wasted potential. And sadly, The Avengers is likely to water down Battleship's box office performance, which I estimate will do okay the first week, but will see an insanely drastic drop the following, so we probably won't get a sequel to ever find it out

I didn't expect much from Battleship. I thought it was one of the stupidest ideas ever put on screen...but I hoped that it would somehow be made into something, perhaps entertaining, at least. Alas, Battleship is unimaginative even by Hollywood standards.

These movies exist only to make a quick buck, because there are plenty of meat heads out there that will eat this up. I won't be seeing Battleship, because it looks like nothing more than an opportunity to flex some CGI biceps and show what state of the art action effects look like... Which is boring. I'd rather watch a 2:00 trailer. That's enough time to get my fix for those sorts of things.

Oh and that was the other problem with the movie. Rihanna. A complete and utter rip-off of a far superior tomboy character in Aliens.

Rihanna "acted" in it, or she was on the sound track? I don't think I've ever seen someone successfully dabble in Hollywood that first started in music.

Silent Souls

Last night I saw a most beautiful and subtle Russian movie called, "Silent Souls".

The Russians have such exquisite artistic taste without the obligatory happy ending.

"Silent Souls", is a deeply satisfying movie, let it wash over you and seep into you, and only let yourself discover the meaning slowly, as if by surprise, for it is a surprise, as the music, the landscape and the characters will seduce you, will lull you, lullaby you away from the reality which is almost too much to bear.

I watched Murder on the Orient Express yesterday. Having read the book before, I think it's an excellent adaptation, but I also think some aspects of it can seem confusing and rushed to those who haven't read the source material...

Also, Lauren Bacall FTW. :nice:

I loved Casino Royale, directed by Martin Campbell of Goldeneye, The Mask of Zorro, and Green Lantern (but let's not let one movie spoil the others that were good), but hated Quantum of Solace, directed by Mark Forster, who has mostly art house films to his credit, with Quantum being a sorely subpar action film with a subpar villain. And with Sam Mendes directing Skyfall, I fear we're in for another stage presentation captured on film, which worked fine for American Beauty, but this is not an Oscar masterpiece, this is a James Bond film!!!

And Daniel Craig's Bond films are way too broody. In recent years, the franchise has become too proud of itself to be involved with silly gadgets and gimmicks, and somehow becoming dark and gritty makes it more realistic and believable. I don't want Bond to be realistic and believable, I want it to be fun! I want the stupid puns that I'm not ashamed to admit made me laugh. I want a car with all kinds of optional features. I want a villain that is so hammy that you remember him. And for Christ's sake, I want the gun barrel sequence to be at the opening before the pre-title sequence, where it belongs. And I want David Arnold to score Skyfall, not Sam Mendes' long-time colleague Thomas Newman, who is not well-suited for action scores.

And they're not shooting or converting this into 3D? Bond is the perfect franchise for this! I'd love to see a gun barrel sequence with more depth! It's an even more perfect sequence to shoot in 3D!! And dammit, it's the franchise's 50th fucking anniversary!!!

I disagree entirely.

The bond series was becoming a caricature of itself with all the gimmicks. I love the much more serious bent of the reboots.

I'll agree that quantum was a disappointment, but I think the studio learned its lesson with the last one and that this film will be good.

I mean Javier Bardem is the villian. How can that not be awesome.

Trust me, he will be no Blofeld.

And wouldn't you rather see a climatic showdown between Bond and the villain in a giant volcano lair instead of, I don't know, a hotel in the desert?

Not really.

The films have more impact for me, the more I can identify them with real life. But then again I'm a huge supporter of realism in films.

For instance the black and white intro to Royale where bond (basically) beats a man to death in the bathroom was one of the most gripping scenes I've seen period...

I also am not ready to say Sam Mendes won't knock this out of the park. I loved Jar Head and trust that he has the skills to know what kind of direction a good bond film needs.

I found all the gimmickry childish, and also thought it distracted from the fact that the best weapon in Bond is bond himself, not some silly ray gun. I'm not saying there should be no gadgets, but the gadgets should play a small supporting role compared to Bond himself.

One of the things I liked most about Royale was how they explored Bond's back story and emotional landscape much more thoroughly. With the campyness of the 80's and 90's Bonds, you never thought of Bond as a real person, just a silly action hero traipsing about the screen.

With the reboots, the action element is still there, but they are able to turn Bond into a 3 dimensional character that you actually care about as a man.

Anyway, I'm stoked to see it either way, and can't wait to see some more Daniel Craig badassery.
