    Silent Souls

Last night I saw a most beautiful and subtle Russian movie called, "Silent Souls".

The Russians have such exquisite artistic taste without the obligatory happy ending.

"Silent Souls", is a deeply satisfying movie, let it wash over you and seep into you, and only let yourself discover the meaning slowly, as if by surprise, for it is a surprise, as the music, the landscape and the characters will seduce you, will lull you, lullaby you away from the reality which is almost too much to bear.

Watched all the Peep Shows on Netflix. It was Brilliant, as they say in the UK. I need to download the two current series to catch up on.

I watched Murder on the Orient Express yesterday. Having read the book before, I think it's an excellent adaptation, but I also think some aspects of it can seem confusing and rushed to those who haven't read the source material...

    Also, Lauren Bacall FTW.

I loved Casino Royale, directed by Martin Campbell of Goldeneye, The Mask of Zorro, and Green Lantern (but let's not let one movie spoil the others that were good), but hated Quantum of Solace, directed by Mark Forster, who has mostly art house films to his credit, with Quantum being a sorely subpar action film with a subpar villain. And with Sam Mendes directing Skyfall, I fear we're in for another stage presentation captured on film, which worked fine for American Beauty, but this is not an Oscar masterpiece, this is a James Bond film!!!

And Daniel Craig's Bond films are way too broody. In recent years, the franchise has become too proud of itself to be involved with silly gadgets and gimmicks, and somehow becoming dark and gritty makes it more realistic and believable. I don't want Bond to be realistic and believable, I want it to be fun! I want the stupid puns that I'm not ashamed to admit made me laugh. I want a car with all kinds of optional features. I want a villain that is so hammy that you remember him. And for Christ's sake, I want the gun barrel sequence to be at the opening before the pre-title sequence, where it belongs. And I want David Arnold to score Skyfall, not Sam Mendes' long-time colleague Thomas Newman, who is not well-suited for action scores.

And they're not shooting or converting this into 3D? Bond is the perfect franchise for this! I'd love to see a gun barrel sequence with more depth! It's an even more perfect sequence to shoot in 3D!! And dammit, it's the franchise's 50th fucking anniversary!!!

    I disagree entirely.

The bond series was becoming a caricature of itself with all the gimmicks. I love the much more serious bent of the reboots.

I'll agree that quantum was a disappointment, but I think the studio learned its lesson with the last one and that this film will be good.

I mean Javier Bardem is the villian. How can that not be awesome.

Trust me, he will be no Blofeld.

And wouldn't you rather see a climatic showdown between Bond and the villain in a giant volcano lair instead of, I don't know, a hotel in the desert?

    Not really.

The films have more impact for me, the more I can identify them with real life. But then again I'm a huge supporter of realism in films.

For instance the black and white intro to Royale where bond (basically) beats a man to death in the bathroom was one of the most gripping scenes I've seen period...

I also am not ready to say Sam Mendes won't knock this out of the park. I loved Jar Head and trust that he has the skills to know what kind of direction a good bond film needs.

I found all the gimmickry childish, and also thought it distracted from the fact that the best weapon in Bond is bond himself, not some silly ray gun. I'm not saying there should be no gadgets, but the gadgets should play a small supporting role compared to Bond himself.

One of the things I liked most about Royale was how they explored Bond's back story and emotional landscape much more thoroughly. With the campyness of the 80's and 90's Bonds, you never thought of Bond as a real person, just a silly action hero traipsing about the screen.

With the reboots, the action element is still there, but they are able to turn Bond into a 3 dimensional character that you actually care about as a man.

Anyway, I'm stoked to see it either way, and can't wait to see some more Daniel Craig badassery.
