This thread is for appreciation of orchestral music. As far as music goes, the amount of energy and passion that goes into an orchestral performance is far greater than any other form of music and it shows.

I'd like to propose just a few rules:
- This is for orchestral music only. Note the title does not say "classical" music, it says "orchestral" music.
- You must have listened to the piece you mention on the day that you post.
- Feel free to post links. But you are not obligated to post any links to the work in question, especially if it hasn't been uploaded to Youtube or whatever.

I love classical music with a great passion but opera is where my heart lies. :)

I do enjoy some orchestral works though. A new favourite of mine is Edward Elgar's Cello Concerto in E Minor.

Here's the 1st movement as interpreted by Yo-Yo Ma and the Chicago Symphony Orchestra with Daniel Barenboim!

I guess you wouldn't mind piano concertos..? Martha Argerich is my favorite pianist (afaik).

I once saw a Youtube video of Martha Argerich playing Prokofiev. I had never, before seeing that, thought that I could describe an almost 70yr-old woman as sexy.

Homegirl worked that piano.

Today I enjoyed listening to Wagner's "The Ring" performed without words by the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra (1988). I must admit I am not a fan of operatic singing and so I find these "without words" interpretations intriguing.

Just a note on the thread though, tone down the discussion about pianists and more on the orchestras and orchestral works. There are already threads dedicated towards piano and classical music appreciation, but this one is focused on orchestral music.

I know! She is incredible, and I know what you mean about sexy. She seems ageless...

My ice cold heart always melts when I listen to such geek-classics mastered into the most beautiful medium in music. Nostalgia... I hate it. I hate it. I hate it. I hate it. I hate it. I hate it.

I've been listening to the Brahms symphonies and I'd have to say they are very good. Brahms has been accused of being 'conservative' or an evolved Beethoven. But I'd have to say that his music is much smoother than Beethoven's and doesn't have those annoying cadences that Beethoven likes to drill into you, at least in Beethoven's earlier works.

Beethoven's eight and 9th (before the vocal parts) are still very good though.

So I'd like to relax the constraints of my OP - all you need to do is discuss specific orchestral works. Try to avoid discussion of solo piano works!

So without further ado, which is your favourite piece out of Holst's "The Planets"?
