I don't think that Elfboy is the exception. Not every anime fan walks around referring to anime, but it seems really common to me in real life as well as here- in the few anime freaks I've encountered. It's just so disturbing to me to idolize/ try to personify cartoon characters. And, again, I know that sounds ridiculous in itself, I don't know why it's so disturbing. It looks like cartoons to me. I know that they are supposed to tell some story that people are supposed to find true in their own lives. Someone else referred to the band "Coheed and Cambria" in the same way. I just can't make that jump. It's just escapism at the end of the day, and everybody needs that in some way. (Some people need American Idol. Some people need star wars, some people need soap operas, some people need Anime, I guess.)
I love Star Wars. But I don't constantly refer to it. In fact, I'm hard pressed to think of any group of fans that constantly refers to the object of their fandom the way anime fans do.
There are a few animes that I've been acquainted with via several... well come to think of it... FPs really that are pretty good. But my interest is passing. Their interest is more like a rabid fetish. I don't know why anime fandom inspires such... unhealthy levels of obsession frankly.
"There is no god; there is only us. Savage and fragile."
Hmm. Well. I enjoy anime, though I don't ever admit it in real life, and the friends I have that DO enjoy anime are similarly closeted. There IS a stigma associated with it, because well.
Most anime is crap.
Sailor Moon? Dragon Ball Z? Yugioh? Inuyasha? Naruto?
I would rather drink a bowl of warm dog snot.

Annnd here we see the TV Trope argument. Every plot can be "boiled down" into specific "tropes" - http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/HomePage
This argument applies to everything though, and I'd say much of what Hollywood pumps out is just as bland and predictable as most Anime.
Personally, I pick and choose what I watch, for Anime and for Movies. I have limited time and I don't waste it on something I won't enjoy. Twilight? Transformers 3? Sorry, I've got better things to do with my time.
One other strike against Anime is "Fan Service" - so if you're a guy and you watch Anime, clearly "you're a pervert, because it's cartoon porn isn't it!?!?!"
You would be surprised the number of times I've had to argue this one. What can I say? The Japanese are an island nation of perverts. I put it in the same category as R-rated movies, or series like "Dexter" on Showtime. I'm an adult, I choose to watch this because of the story, NOT because of "fan service".
Some anime that is surprisingly good and relatively friendly to the uninitiated.
Full Metal Alchemist & Full Metal Alchemist: Brotherhood (Though at times it is too "drama" filled. Took me till episode 4 to start getting interested.)
Cowboy Bebop (The only live action comparison I can make would be to firefly; Or rather, I would say that firefly is vaguely reminiscent of Cowboy Bebop, since Cowboy Bebop came first.)
Death Note (Will you root for the Villain Protaganist or for the ones trying to catch him? All I know is that if there IS such a thing as a death note, heaven help the world if it were to fall into my hands xD)
And lastly, Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion. Bar none, BEST anime I've watched. Ever.
Actually, quite a few sports threads, the difference is that in sports threads, those without interest in the sports don't bitch about it. Whilest those that don't like anime seems to have to bitch about it. ;D
I'd really have my work cut out for me if I injected my opposition to professional sports into every topic on it.

Currently I've been reading/watching Black Butler, though I'm not sure which is better, the anime or the manga. They both definitely have their failings but I'm enjoying both of them. What else am I watching? Hm. Neon Genesis Evangelion Rebuild.
I do find that a lot of anime is overwrought, but then again, I found the final Harry Potter movie to be the same way. Beggars can't be choosers.
