Just starting to get on classical music. I don't know much right now but I do know 2 things:

1. I like it when my classical music is emotional, I like it when you can think up a narrative when you listen to it.

2. Shockingly, I don't like Mozart. lol no offense to anyone but Mozart to me is like the Justin Bieber of Classical music (no that does not mean that Bieber is the Mozart of pop). He's just the popular name that people know, but at least personally, his music does nothing for me. It doesn't meet criteria 1 :p.

Any suggestions for classical music? Name any piece, chances are I won't know it lol so any suggestions are good. My favorite classical piece right now is Satie's Gymnopedie 1. Gorgeous piece of music imo :)

I like just kicking back on the narrative vibe too. I'm mostly a rock fan, but my first love of music was being taken to a symphony when I was young.. and I remember closing my eyes, letting it tell a story. Nothing flows like it. I'd probably suggest piano heavy works (that's just me atm). Chopin, Ravel, Rachmaninov..

I would have to disagree with assessment that Mozart is the "Justin Bieber of Classical music". Pretty insolent for someone who claims they are new to the genre. Personally although not above criticism I think Mozart is astounding.

Adagio for Strings Samuel Barber (1910-1981) is a sad but beautiful piece which will touch the heart of most who are curious about the genre.

All I mean is that the music does nothing for me. It doesn't tug on my heart strings. lol obviously I don't mean to hate on all mozart fans. Eh, yeah, just not my genre within classical music.

Bach wrote the soundtrack for the Church.

And Beethoven wrote the soundtrack for the Bourgeoise.

While Mozart wrote music.

I have to say I'm somewhat in the same boat as you. however I still have my exceptions (that I'll list), and I will say I'll attribute most of these to actually having sat in an orchestra and played them/sang them in an opera. Being a part of the music really intensifies it, and, well, Mozart was fantastic at what he did.

This is going to be a long post because I adore classical music and I really just love sharing it with everyone :)

-Beethoven symphonies. All of them. Oh my god. However, my vote for favourite probably has to go to Symphony No. 8, especially the finale...

i feel this is the most underrated of them all.

-Beethoven Piano Concerto No. 3 in C Minor

here's the second half of the first movement...cadenza starts at 2:18
The second movement, I think, is heart-wrenching

One thing about Beethoven is the poor guy just could NOT end a piece. and i mean, i understand why, but in some pieces like the above and the Symphony No. 9 finale this is really pronounced. I actually find this to be hilarious.

-Mozart: ok, I'm not the biggest fan but here is some of what I consider to be "essential Mozart for people who don't really care for Mozart":

-Mozart Requiem. It's epic.
-Violin Concerto in D Major

cadenza starts ~5:30. I played this piece solely for this cadenza
-Queen of the Night Aria. :wubbie:

-Symphony No. 41. Oh my god. The last minute or so of the last movement...

-Dvorak:
New World Symphony

American String Quartet (No. 12 in F Major)

Cello Concerto in B

If these next two don't tug at your heart strings, then I don't know what will
Sibelius Violin Concerto in D Minor

Bruch Violin Concerto in G Minor (can you figure out what instrument I play yet? :alttongue:)

Others
Elgar Cello Concerto

Shostakovich Piano Concerto No. 2 in F Major

Pretty cliche, but I absolutely love Chopin's Op. 9 No. 2. Absolutely fantastic.

Although technically this doesn't fall under classical, an immensely compelling piece, especially if heard live: Richard Strauss' Fruhling.

If you like Satie, then also try Germaine Tailleferre, Arthur Honegger, Philip Glass, and Arvo Part. These represent a variety of styles, but understatement and expressiveness is part of their core.
