If you are interested to make a voyage through time and space, to seek out new cultures and new civilizations, I could continue.

While this is not especially my "favorite kind of music" (It would rather be baroque, classical and jazz), I think it could be a good opportunity to discover a foreign popular culture.

For instance, here's a French singer from the eighties... Yes, that's more than 20-25 years ago, but I think it could be interesting nonetheless. Does that sound exotic to your Anglo-Saxon ears?

Here's Etienne Daho:

Dailymotion - Etienne Daho - Le premier jour, une vidéo de booahhh. etienne, daho, premier, jour, francais

And another curious song:

Dailymotion - etienne Daho " des heures hindoues", une vidéo de chrisclement. daho, music

The lyrics are rather disorienting. Because, under a rather joyful and sunny melody, Daho could often express a very bleak, dark, disheartening mood. "Even if I'm nobody, nobody... just a particle of dust that fades into greyness..."... Curious guy, really...

Very French, somehow... But again, it's so... typical of the 80'es!

If we continue our voyage into French "variety" during those times... well... I guess I a lot of you already know Serge Gainsbourg, right?

So I would show you some lesser known "artists" (If you can call them that way), at last in Anglo-Saxon coutries. They show a slightly different musical taste, nonetheless...

For instance, we had two composers, two Michel (Berger and Polnareff)... and here's a song from Berger, sung by Françoise Hardy.

Dailymotion - FRANÇOISE HARDY - Message Personnel, une vidéo de Pat-Sera. Françoise, Hardy

And here's one composed by the previous Daho, sung by Hardy:

Dailymotion - FRANÇOISE HARDY - PARTIR QUAND MÊME (VERSION LONGUE), une vidéo de TEXEL80. françoise, hardy, partir, quand, années

And here's one sung by Berger himself.

Dailymotion - Michel Berger - Le Paradis Blanc, une vidéo de Pierrot68. michel, berger, paradis, blanc, enfoires

The main theme here is Antarctica ("White paradise"), a recurring theme within French culture. The southern continent has inspired an incredible amount of our "artists" during the 70es-80es. Jean-Michel Jarre, for instance.
Maybe it's the Cousteau effect?

Again, a curious journey through French popular music... just to give you the mood... :D

If you want to have a good laugh, I couln't resist to show you this clip from 1973.

Imagine how people could dress in such colourful ways, flared trousers and so on??? This were the seventies in France!
Simply hilarious! Our parents had no shame, then!

Again, the lyrics are very serious, socialy engaged, telling a tale of ideological desenchantment; they contrast with the exuberant colours displayed. It's so curious to hear this on supermarkets, again...

Just Right now I've been listening to Between The Buried and Me, which is the Musician's equivalent of watching an Olympic diver dive into a shot glass:

On a more passionate note: I've absolutely been in love with this song lately(Although the rest of the album isn't bad either):

Andrew Bird

Andrew Bird -- Noble Beast is playing on a loop in my car right now. This is my favorite song (after the slower intro, it picks up at 1:20 or so). Love the lyrics.

so they took me to the hospital
they put my body through a scan
what they saw there would impress them all
for inside me grows a man
who speaks with perfect diction
as he orders my eviction
as he acts with more conviction
than I
