    Here's some of my favorites.

One of the comfiest closing songs ever from an album that fits any mood I'm in.

"Conquering myself, until I see another hurdling approaching. Say we can, say we will, not just another... drop in the ocean!" I love the sheer energy of this track and the melody that kicks in after the second chorus has a real inspiring, "you can do it, man!" feel to it, along with the ambiguity of its subject matter. Love these guys.

John Maus is one of the strangest people to ever write a pop song, but they're all so ridiculously catchy, almost to the point where it becomes a mantra inside your head.

More energy. I like how this track has a kind of melancholic feel to it, without losing its raw power. Love the lyrics too.

"Te Deum", Marc-Antoine Charpentier (1643-1704), one of the quintessential French Baroque composer, who lived during the "Grand siècle", the reign of the famous megalomaniac king Louis the fourteenth. If you really want to learn about French high culture and you have twenty minutes to spare, please enjoy...

In the same style, here is a mottet from the French Baroque composer Michel-Richard Delalande (1657-1726). In particular, the last strophe "Gloria Patri" (starting at 22:24) is interesting, not only because it clearly demonstrates how talented these musicians were (especially compared to contemporary ones), but also because Delalande uses a complex mathematical structure (harmonic symmetry) typical of his works. Such attention to mathematics will also be found, decades later, in Bach.

If you really want to seek the roots of western European music, just hear how it sounded during the transition between Middle-Ages and Renaissance (XVth-XVIth centuries). It was already capable of conveying deep emotions, and complexity, and was still greatly influenced both by Andalucian-Arab composers and Religious choirs (Ars antiqua + Ars nova).
