Yeah, that was the first song I heard by them, and I was immediately hooked. I haven't listened to Roisin Murphy's solo stuff ... yet. :P

Amon Tobin is one of my all-time favorite electronic musicians. One of my favorite songs:

Two days ago, one of the greatest French singers and composers died from a lung cancer. His name was Alain Bashung (1947-2009).

I know that most of you just don't understand French, but believe me, the lyrics are simply outstanding. Subtle, complex, deep, rich, full of poetic allusions.
One of the last giant of the "chanson franaise" has just vanished.

Nonetheless, this is an opportunity to discover another part of modern French culture, if you are interested. Maybe it has an exotic, sensuous flavour for most of you, but here it is.

A song from 1991. About love-making, extremely French somehow...

Those who would be able to translate the lyrics could be... surprised!

Madame rve d'atomiseurs
Et de cylindres si longs
Qu'ils sont les seuls
Qui la remplissent de bonheur
Madame rve d'artifices
Des formes oblongues
Et de totems qui la punissent

Rve d'archipels
De vagues perptuelles
Sismiques et sensuelles

D'un amour qui la flingue
D'une fuse qui l'pingle
Au ciel
Au ciel

On est loin des amours de loin
On est loin des amours de loin
On est loin

Madame rve ad libitum
Comme si c'tait tout comme
Dans les prires
Qui emprisonnent et vous librent
Madame rve d'apesanteur
Des heures des heures
De voltige plusieurs

Rve de fougres
De foudres et de guerres
A faire et refaire

D'un amour qui la flingue
D'une fuse qui l'pingle
Au ciel
Au ciel

On est loin des amours de loin
On est loin des amours de loin
On est loin

Madame rve
Au ciel
Madame rve
Au ciel
Madame rve

And here is another:

On m'a vu dans le Vercors
Sauter l'lastique
Voleur d'amphores
Au fond des criques
J'ai fait la cour a des murnes
J'ai fait l'amour
J'ai fait le mort
T'tais pas ne
A la station balnaire
tu t'es pas fait prier
J'tais gant de crin, geyser
Pour un peu, je trempais
Histoire d'eau

[Refrain] :
La nuit je mens
Je prends des trains
travers la plaine
La nuit je mens
Je m'en lave les mains.

J'ai dans les bottes
des montagnes de questions
O subsiste encore ton cho
O subsiste encore ton cho.
J'ai fait la saison
dans cette boite crnienne
Tes penses, je les faisais miennes
T'accaparer, seulement t'accaparer
d'estrade en estrade
J'ai fait danser tant de malentendus
Des kilomtres de vie en rose
Un jour au cirque
Un autre a chercher te plaire
dresseur de loulous
Dynamiteur d'aqueducs

[Refrain]

J'ai dans les bottes
des montagnes de questions
O subsiste encore ton cho
O subsiste encore ton cho.
On m'a vu dans le Vercors
Sauter l'lastique
Voleur d'amphores

Well, all I can say is that the lyrics of the first song are extremely erotic, and should be fully understood only by "mature" audiences. And yet it's not vulgar, nor obscene. Very delicate, very sensuous.

Maybe what we see here is the gap between French and Anglo-Saxon culture. For us French, love-making is an Art. This tendency is less suppressed throughout our culture, less taboo, yet it's not as flashy, or displayed as aggressively as in the Anglo-Saxon medias.

Such songs could be aired on prime-time hours in the French medias, while I do not think this could be possible in the US.

Anyway.

I will try to make you a crude, very crude translation. Of course, you lose half of the subtleties and nuances. And I have no other options but to pick more explicit words when most of the time, it's rather suggested with wordplays and metaphors, but anyway...

---

Madame dreams of air sprays
And cylinders so lengthy
That they're the only one
To fulfill her with happiness.
Madame dreams of devices
Of oblong silhouettes
And sticks that punish her.

Dream of archipelago
Of perpetual waves
Seismic and sensuous...

From a love that shoots her down
From a rocket that pins her up
To heaven
To heaven...

We're far away from loves from far away
We're far away from loves from far away
We're far away...

Madame dreams ad libitum
Just as if it were just as
In prayers
That imprison and free you both.
Madame dreams of weightlessness
Hours and hours
Of acrobatics with many

Dream of ferns
Of thunders and wars
To do and redo...

From a love that shoots her down
From a rocket that pins her up
To heaven
To heaven...

We're far away from loves from far away
We're far away from loves from far away
We're far away...

Madame dreams
Of heaven...
Madame dreams
Of heaven...
