Me First And The Gimme Gimme's have some decent covers, I believe it's all they do. Their Cat Stevens cover stands out.

Yes a most definitely epic song! I actually was in temp distraught cause It was that one or the one I posted as my favorite lol.

^^ You should have posted them both. Who says you can't have more than one favorite?

I like Johnny's version better. It gives me goosebumps every time.

Most epic indeed!

Let's see. Does Sinead's version of "Nothing Compares 2 U" count?

Whitney Houston's "I Will Always Love You" is the rare mega-hit ballad that is absolutely that good.

Pretty much every cover Ted Leo does is pretty awesome.

The Bangles' version of "Hazy Shade of Winter" is the definitive one, IMHO.

The Beatles' "Twist and Shout" is an obvious one.

The late Isaac Hayes' version of "By the Time I Get to Phoenix" is 18 minutes of awesome.

The Pretenders (a great band) covered The Kinks (a ludicrously great band) on "Stop Your Sobbing."

The Pet Shop Boys did the definitive "Always on My Mind."

CCR's "I Heard It Through the Grapevine" may be two or three minutes too long, but it's spooky and beautiful.

The Clash's "I Fought the Law" is one of their three or four best songs, thus it's one of the greatest songs ever recorded.

The Byrds' covers of Dylan's "Mr. Tambourine Man" and "My Back Pages" are superior to the originals.

Morrissey's covers of "My Insatiable One" by Suede and "That's Entertainment" by The Jam are both stellar.

Faith No More did a pretty sweet cover of Sabbath's "War Pigs."

I am sure I am missing more.

Metallica - Last Caress (The Misfits)
The White Stripes - Death Letter (Son House)
U2 - Everlasting Love (Robert Knight)
Anthrax/Public Enemy - Bring The Noise (Public Enemy - I know that's half cheating, but it's awesome)
Aretha Franklin - Respect (Otis Redding)
Stevie Ray Vaughan - Superstition (Stevie Wonder)
The Rolling Stones - Just My Imagination (The Temptations)
Aerosmith - Big Ten Inch Record (Bull Moose Jackson)
Bruce Springsteen - Jersey Girl (Tom Waits)
Def Leppard - Hanging On The Telephone (Blondie)
Duran Duran - White Lines (Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five)
Jeff Buckley - Hallelujah (Leonard Cohen)

Nirvana - Molly's Lips (Vaselines)
Red Hot Chili Peppers - Higher Ground (Stevie Wonder)
The Ramones - Substitute (The Who)
Scissor Sisters - Comfortably Numb (Pink Floyd)

Awesome covers I've seen done live:

The Raconteurs - Bang Bang (Sonny Bono)
Heart - Rock N' Roll (Led Zeppelin)
Prince - Whole Lotta Love (Led Zeppelin)
The Black Crowes - The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down (The Band)

Covers I'd like to commission (a favorite pastime):
