    Cool thread.

I like about half of those.

I'll add some of my favourites in a bit.

What does indie mean today? I know it used to mean independently released, but that was in like...1988. Is it basically skinny-pale-guys-in-european-cut-short-sleeved-button-down-shirts now?

It's a way to say "Cool" without coming off as an elitist tryhard.

I used to read a magazine from England ( Wire ? ) to keep up with the more obscure parts of this scene, but the Borders here in Chicago have screwed it up lately. They get the issues in so late that the people who cycle out magazines that "didn't sell during the last month" grab them and throw them out ( or return them ) before one even has a chance to buy read them, as soon as they arrive, practically. I'm not sure how much they let you read on their site - here it is..The Wire: Adventures in Modern Music: Index

You can spend a shitload "keeping up" with all this stuff year after year, decade after decade. I am now trying to just get started creating my own sound projects, and making sense of the thousands of recordings I've already accumulated. I still acquire new stuff, but not as often as before.

Yeah, it's not like the 70s when all you had to do was listen to FM radio. Or so I've heard.

That was roughly what I thought. I believe an accurate descripitive term for the genre would be "Like Coldplay" though I may be very wrong here

Definitely some good stuff there, I love Animal Collective, and the Decemberists, I'm only vaguely familiar with the others...

I'm right into Iron & Wine and Bon Iver at the moment. I guess I'm mainly an "indie" folk fan, I guess I just love the idea of the musician grabbing a guitar and using it to make music in a unique way. Oh and Panda Bear's last album was great!
    Good Dog Nigel

Arf, arf, he goes, a merry sight,
    Our little hairy friend,
Arf, arf, upon the lampost bright
    Arfing round the bend.
    Nice dog! Goo boy,
    Waggie tail and beg,
    Clever Nigel, jump for joy
Because we're putting you to sleep at three of the clock, Nigel. -John Lennon

How do y'all keep up with all those bands? Looks exhausting to me. And then when you've found people you like, suddenly those people are overexposed and lame and you have to dig up new ones.
