    haha seriously
I used to try to keep up with that indie music, but there was just waaaaaay too much for me to even comprehend. I listen to some stuff here and there but I don't go out buying a lot of their albums.

The whole process of being supercool, in general, is pretty exhausting. That's why I can't be bothered myself

To me, (good) music is like water to me. I can't seem to go a day without it, and I am constantly searching for new music. But it also serves as inspiration for my art, so if I live with the same stuff, my work and life feel stagnant.

Plus, within my group of friends, there's an unspoken contest for who can find the best new music. I think I'm winning.

I find it through "indie" radio stations and college/underground stations. I also browse Myspace every now and then for musicians I haven't heard. Then I have my ways of downloading their music and sharing!

A part of me is sick to death with indie. It bugs me how little variety there is, the clichés, how the fans regard themselves as oh so open-minded... Based on this it might sound like I don't listen to indie, but ironically I listen to quite a lot of indie, although I have become very skeptical of checking out new indie music, since so much of it bores me to death with its clichés. Anyhow, some indie favorites:

    Radiohead
    Sun Kil Moon
    Mew
    Bonnie 'Prince' Billy
    Bon Iver
    The Arcade Fire
    Neutral Milk Hotel
    TV on the Radio
    Fleet Foxes

    Okay.

    City and Colour
    Stars
    Yeah Yeah Yeahs
    Metric
    spoon
    Wolf Parade
    Tegan & Sara
    The Shins
    Raine Maida
    Peter Bjorn and John
    The New Pornographers
    MGMT
    Kasabian
    Hot Hot Heat
    Feist
    Arctic Monkeys
    Arcade Fire
    Martha Wainwright

It was interesting looking through my collection to see which bands are indie and which aren't. For example the Arctic Monkeys are officially indie simply because they refused
to sign a major record deal while a lot of smaller bands I'm a fan of actually aren't.

What's also interesting is that Death Cab For Cutie is classified as indie while on wikipedia it says that they are under five different labels. Three of them are independent while two are Warner and Atlantic.

That's cool, penelope. I know my roommate gets exposed to a lot of indie artists though Live Journal and imeem, etc., and sometimes I do find a few bands through her that I do like. I like Iron and Wine and Fleet Foxes, especially. I do tend to be more of a backfiller in terms of music, though...I tend to comb through stuff that was made before the era I grew up in. Most of the indie stuff that my roommate digs up is just not really my taste.

I know what you mean. A few years ago, "indie" (I put it in quotes because most popular indie artists are signed, but they retain that flavor) was recognized by few, and because they genuinely liked the music. Now, it's become the underground popular circle to be in. I've met and known a lot of "fakes" who pretend to be really into it, when they fail to appreciate what's so awesome about this music in the first place. And likewise, there are a lot of artists out there now that are just copying others and turning themselves into a cliche. They're not original or creative.

Yeah, I think indie now is just described by its flavor, not by the artists refusing or not being signed to a label. Although, DCFC has become a lot more recognized by the mainstream anyway. Still, they retain their flavor.

    Indie music = love.

Right now, I'm over-playing the new Animal Collective and The Walkmen new albums.

Also, The Mae Shi, The Most Serene Republic, and Annie. Incredible, in addition to the other bands others have listed.
