So, the best solution is to have both a gun and a knife. If someone somehow gets close enough to you to get the gun, you have a backup, which at that range...is just as useful.

shotgun is "home defence"? Surely the one thing you are guaranteed to mess up is your home! Plus is there any weapon that's slower to reload?

The point of a shotgun is to not worry about a slower reload, nor damaging your house. As a matter of fact, I can guarantee you that if you had someone invading your house, and you walked out with a shotgun and cocked it, you wouldn't even need it to be loaded. They would run. Shotguns have been ranked within the top 10 scariest noises a human can ever hear.

And on top of that(in a theoretical situation where you need to fire), for a person who never target practices with a pistol, you don't even need to aim with a shotgun.

Yeah, I agree. Although, with some handguns (such as mine) you can't fire even if there's one in the chamber if you just release the magazine.

How about crossbows? I live close to Virginia and would really like to have one of those too.

I'd love a crossbow, but all the ones they make now are modern ones.

I don't like them, really.

I've found some places that make traditional medieval ones, so I'm going to look into getting one of those eventually.

I'm pretty traditional when it comes to my weapons.

Right now, I'm putting the finishing touches on my Greek Doru.

I'd say these are more my style. I've shot far more arrows from more bows than all the guns and bullets I've shot put together. There's something nice about a good "thok" when the arrow hits the target.

I love going to archery competitions and I love bowhunting.

Its a very graceful, rewarding experience.

And I love hearing the arrow fly.

May I ask why? .. I'm no expert, but in my head a gun seems like the deadliest hunting tool in comparison to a crossbow. Or am I mistaken? (Not to underestimate the crossbow )

Well, the way archers look at it is that a crossbow isn't an actual bow.

Originally, not even compounds were supposed to be legal during archery season.

With crossbows and compounds, it makes shooting so easy that you might as well be shooting a gun. Personally, I agree.

At the same time, I would like to hunt with a traditional crossbow, so I think that they should change it to where you can at least hunt with a crossbow during gun season.

But I don't like the compounds and the crossbows with the sights and scopes and stabilizers and all the other shit people put on it.

To me, that isn't archery. It takes out most if not all of the skill altogether.

^ Ugh.. Entirely embarrassing, I must say. I think the worst I've done is a couple times I was so concentrated on making my mark with the M16/M4 (whatever I'm using at the time) that the kickback hits against my eye pro and I get a little nose bridge bruise by the time I'm done on the range.

Also when I first handled the m9 beretta (and a hand gun at all actually) the slide back sliced my thumb open handling it wrong.

^ Just the same as guns can be overpowered but that's less likely. But between a knife and a baseball bat, I think I may feel safer with the knife. Between a gun and a knife.. I'd say a gun.

I'd say I'd feel safer with a bat moreso than a knife solely on the fact that I have more range with a bat.

The Japanese used to issue one to their officers during WWII that was a pistol and a sword combined!!!

I'd like to shoot one, never gotten the chance. Have had the second part happen though, stupid metal grinder.

Also, not trying to be obnoxious or anything, you know you can use the multi-quote button, right? It's the one right next to the quote button, and you hit that on all the things you want to quote, and then for the last one, click the quote button, and you have all the quotes in one post..

I think you're supposed to shut your eyes before you pull the trigger on those things.

No, you're not. Although in colonial warfare, many soldiers did.

It's a reflex to close your eyes, but you really should try your best not to.

I've only had it spark back on me once, but that was because I put too much powder in the prism.

You can also get a flashguard to block the sparks. I have one now.

The thought is that it is easier to aim during times of stress plus the pellets lack the power to go through multiple walls and harming unintended people in other rooms (same reason that I have a .380). As for slower to reload; I don't really understand that? I have automatic shotguns for hunting that all hold 5 shells + 1 in the chamber and faster to reload than a revolver or clip with the exception of using another clip or a speed reloader for a revolver.

Well I'm presuming that if you go to all the trouble of having a pistol you'd get a spare clip for it. Why wouldn't you?

As for penetration I'd personally try and get hold of safety rounds for that precise purpose. Hits harder, damages hard stuff less.

Well the reason why everyone loves Desert Eagles (including yourself, if you deny it your a liar!) is because their indeniably beautiful if there were such a word for a gun.

Sorry it just looks like one of those oversize cars. It's just too damn big. Imagine trying to aim on of those in a CQB situation. Your wrists would either shatter or just hurt for frickin hours!!

Isn't that the one designed for armor/vest piercing? I could be thinking of something else, not sure.

It does have armour piercing qualities but it's also supposed to hit harder than a 9mm whilst having a lot less recoil. It's the same round as used in the infamous P90 which has been known to saw through logs and such!!

however, i dont believe a firearm is a good method of home defense for everyone. personally i would not want to risk losing my physical advantages if a gun were involved and somehow got into their hands, baseball bat is much better because someone smaller will not be able to do much with it.

Personally I wouldn't wish to try and utilise a longarm in CQB situations. Surely the extra accuracy is offset by the sheer mass of the weapon. Aiming times have to be awful in comparison to a decent pistol. That and you can keep a pistol close... keeping a shotgun close is a whole lot more of a fag!

That's if you have a pump action and you cock it in earshot. I'd prefer to have it cocked BEFORE I confront a possibly armed invader... call me quirky but I'd rather be ready before I get there...
