View Full Version : INFJs - I need your suggestions on music
I constantly have my iPod on. I'm always looking for new music. Music can really help me... and I'll try not to sound too spiritual-y-ish on you... but it helps me feel more deeply whatever mood I'm in.
Lately, I've really been feeling melancholy and have enjoyed listening to songs by sigur ros, m38, Portishead, Mandalay... etc.
I'm looking for more songs/bands that you think I might like!
Let me know what you INFJs listen to when it's rainy, dark, dreary, outside and you're feeling super contemplative as you drink your coffee/tea.
Sigur Ros
M83
Portishead
Mandalay

I'm familiar with Sigur Ros and M83 (is that who you meant?), but I don't know rokys.
I always thought Radiohead was pretty damn melancholy as well as some of Amy Winehouse's love songs. There's Aqualung. And Vincent Gallo has a few songs like "So Sad", "Honey Bunny", and "A Falling Down Billy Brown."

Yeah, I originally meant 'Royksopp'.
Aaaah yes, Radiohead. I love them too.
Aqualung? I think I've heard of them/her/him/it.?? I will check those out!
Thanks, iwakar!

Are you a fan of Over the Rhine? I like them, though they're a little more contemplative than broody. "Born" is my current play to death song. I love Sigur Ros, too...the language (real or fabricated) is so calming. Emiliana Torrini is another favorite of mine, good old Bjork. Shugo Tokumaru, Imogen Heap, Sufjan Stevens, Jose Gonzalez...and after I'm through my funk, Ben Folds. :P

Anything with piano in it.
Fingers
Like that. Where the piano notes sound like rain.
Sometimes classical piano pieces are nice, too.

Let me know what you INFJs listen to when it's rainy, dark, dreary, outside and you're feeling super contemplative as you drink your coffee/tea.
Ok. There are sooooooooooo many artists I love to listen to during my abundance of different moods but I'll give a few examples.
The Verve - Columbo (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ut_gV5Zw2-Q)
The Verve - Numbness (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fa5FBK4bEVM)
Trip-hop is always great during those contemplative moments during the somber, rainy afternoons and very late at night.
Morcheeba - Slow Down (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xBqa-dNToqk) (sorry, the video gets better halfway through)
I also like original movie scores:
Thomas Newman - Any Other Name (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KTT3aamYovs)
Alexandre Desplat - Sunrise on Lake Pontchartrain (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CpdSYjF0r30&feature=related)
Hans Zimmer - A Small Measure of Peace (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GWm8-jlddaw)
Here's my latest passion:
Oren Lavie - Her Morning Elegance (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2_HXUhShhmY&feature=fvst) (great video as well)
Oren Lavie - A Dance 'Round the Memory Tree (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RriCIT9d9wQ) (don't mind the Narnia pics, the song is great)

In the situation you described, I listen to a lot of Origa (Russian/Japanese club singer), and Alizee (French popstar). A lot of club music.
Good songs from each are: 'Era of Queens' and 'Aney, Unborn Child' by Origa; 'Amélie M`a Dit' and 'Hey! Amigo!' by Alizee - The youtube-able stuff for those two isn't their soothing music (Though 'Inner Universe' for Origa is great, though it was Yoko Kanno who composed the song)
I recently found a good Dutch band called Odin Dragonfly (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ebnDi19QODE). A couple good songs are 'How I Feel Today' and 'Given Time.' Un-youtube-able though.
And if I just want something loud and fun to listen to to get me in a good mood: 'Wooden Pints (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OIc4VHxU7iM)' and 'Metsämies (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MDTq9Ow7Fjw)' by Korpiklaani, and 'Trollhammaren (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yGywo81G6lk&feature=related)' by Finntroll. Not to mention 'Wenches & Mead (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=csHTqMG7zUo)' by Alestorm :D
Now that I think about it, anything by Flogging Molly could be good, too. 'Drunken Lullabies (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pDwlGbEcJ6Y)' and 'The Worst Day Since Yesterday (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sDSud7vAH_0)' particularly.
If you like M83, you'll probably dig Boards of Cananda.

ooooooh kyrielle. this song is from the Cowboy Bebop soundtrack composed by Yoko Kanno, one of my most favorite animes and anime sountracks E-VERRR.
Totally. I love the Seatbelts! It's the way I wish contemporary jazz would sound (at least the stuff they play on the radio)--more like when jazz first emerged from Big Band and the Blues and had just turned from Swing into Bebop. And the anime was great, too. ;)
More INFJ cowboy bebop lovers??? kick ass.
I listen to Loreena McKennitt and Enigma when I get in my moods :/
Yeah, I didn't think anyone would recognise Cowboy Bebop. Cool to see there are some more fans here. :D
Loreena McKennitt is a good one. Caters to those who love a sort of "fairytale"ness essence in music. Enigma kind of freaks me out.

i'll second broadcast, radio dept, and elliot smith.
animal collective sung tongs is really beautiful and almost pastoral. i remember listening to it on winter mornings on a long interstate drive white-washed with snow. panda bear solo would be good too.
post-rock stuff like godspeed, mogwai, obviously, do make say think and a silver mt zion. and most of all broken social scene or a kevin drew solo record.
i like the sea and cake, blonde redhead, definitely belle & sebastian. bon iver, fleet foxes, maybe my favorite band in teh whole world the silver jews with songwriter david berman (thinking the natural bridge, especially). um various records like the velvet underground and nico, i can ALWAYS listen to neutral milk hotel. leonard cohen works too, vashti bunyan.
more sound-focused mood music like caribou, grizzly bear, dj shadow, air, boards of canada, maybe even some drone-y stereolab, can, kraftwerk, the microphones.
shoegaze like jesus and mary chain or galaxie 500 which i personally prefer. my bloody valentine, etc.
i thought antony and the johnsons was a really good call too. maybe scott walker if you are feeling dramatic. i like the guiatarist leo kottke.

is any of you NF's familiar with arvo pärt? e. g. his piano piece "alina"?
floating, soaring, longing, inner tranquility and yet burning from the inside...
what do you feel, what comes to your mind, when you hear it?
i found it on youtube, but the recordings are awful (no subtlety at all) ! so if you're interested in this piece of art, download the original recording from limewire or so...

Ambient:
Eluvium
The Album Leaf
Stars of the Lid
Post-rock and Chamber:
Do Make Say Think
Esmerine (absolutely beautiful)
Rachel's (also beautiful)
Some of the saddest music I've ever heard is by Mono and World's End Girlfriend. The album is "Palmless Prayer/ Mass Murder Refrain"
Singer-songwriter/Folk:
Nick Drake: I could listen to the Pink Moon album every day for the rest of my life.
Bob Dylan
Uncle Tupelo (Would recommend the March 16-20, 1992 album)
I also have a bit of a soft spot for the Amelie soundtrack
I could keep going on with this list for days...
I have playlists on my ipod that are based on moods and my playlist titled 'contemplate' has:
Parting of the Sensory - Modest Mouse
I See a Darkness - Bonnie 'Prince' Billy
Street Spirit (Fade Out) - Radiohead
The Stars are Projectors - Modest Mouse
Baby Blue Sedan - Modest Mouse
Avalanche - Leonard Cohen
The Mariner's Revenge Song - The Decembrists

Intially when I read the title I immediately thought Sigur Ros. I love them so much... my favorite song...so atmospheric and evokes so many feelings:
YouTube - Sigur Ros - Gong (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PivyJUU3k3w&feature=fvw)
Jose Gonzalez is good ...acoustic sound and a pure voice (He appeals to my INFJness often, espcially with this song):
YouTube - José González - Crosses (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E6MSkG5txAA)
this song reminds me of Germany in the eighties when it's raining...
YouTube - Justice - Valentine (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mX3hPSXwudU)
I don't know how other people feel about Enya, but I will admit without too much shame that I love Enya:
YouTube - Enya - Wild Child (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=__0QZTI6W5A)
I'm weird and love melancholic music that is also profound...so I have a thing for funeral music
This is polyphonic choral music and everyone should listen to it because it is extremely beautiful and moving (no seriously, you should really listen):
YouTube - Sleep - Eric Whitacre - Polyphony (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0xn_Qo_WXMg)
this song is beautifully melancholic and folky:
YouTube - Sibylle Bayer - Tonight (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nnmgT8syOxA)
I also reccommend anything by Why?... they are indescribable with beautiful poetic wordiness...

May an INFP recommend some albums? I don't get melancholy much anymore, but when I did, some of the ones that I liked were (in alphabetical order):
Belly - Star
Depeche Mode - Black Celebration
Fiona Apple - Tidal
Led Zeppelin - In Through The Out Door
Mazzy Star - So Tonight That I Might See
Pink Floyd - Dark Side Of The Moon
Trust me, it all makes perfect sense together! :whistling:

Sweeet, one of the melacholic-ish albums I like is in through the out door. Well, being a huge Zeppelin fan, I suppose it's their most melancholic album...or weirdest. Yeah I definitely recommend.
Which reminds me (not on the album):
YouTube - Led Zeppelin- In The Light (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UXFUnnoSphY&feature=PlayList&p=268C70D1B1E757A7&playnext=1&playnext_from=PL&index=34)
I love this song by Led Zeppelin. It's quite weird, moody, and atmospheric.
