Is homework hamrful towards learning in K-12?

Depends on the subject. It's not effective with hands on matters like computers and the like. I would have loved nothing more than homework being a thing of the past, but I see it's usefulness. I see homework as somewhat as a measure of how well you know the material. You could say that this could be done at school, but I find that the home is the best place to measure such, a place of little pressure (in theory at least).

I think it can help and give a framework for deeper understanding of a topic that can be gained by working something out on your own.

Haha. It teaches kids that life is full of work that you don't want to do. They'll be doing homework (the real work) for the big boss man/woman for a very long time.
