I'm not sure, sociologically speaking at least individualism wouldnt exist if it was not a socially useful and marginally, at least, beneficial social construct.

Now it's possible to argue individualism is illusionary and more satisfying and appealing ideology than it is fact, although that's a different point.

That is a good point, possibly the best point, the people who are battling to be top dog dont worry if their battle is going to compromise the future or not.

Absolutely. Those who really are selfish are not going to be dissuaded by the negative impacts that their behavior has on humanity as a whole, especially in over a time period broader than their own lives.

For definite, this makes me think of the other thread about psychopaths, perhaps they are a minority but the norms of selfish competition seem to be evolved to placate them and satisfy them in such ways that they arent killing people and causing disruption of a social breakdown variety. Society is structured in such a way as to placate the most dominant and domineering minorities or elites.

Why not? I dont see every human trait as beneficial to the species, individualism, and by that I mean awareness of one's individuality(as an organism?) is something which occured rather late in the evolutionary scheme of things. Many other ape like ancestors of humans probably possesed it in some degree and died out, and we havent been here that long. All our primal instincts are opposed to the works of consciousness, since civilization, the product of cosnciousness controls and represses our instincts for the most part. Im not arguening for a "return to nature" and instinct here, although it is healthy to have good awareness of these instincts. I dont view the mind and body as seperate, neither do I view them as one essence; it should be said here that I dont view consciousness as a "natural phenomenon" hence it has no real value for the evolution of species. Also, keep in mind that to me consciousness = individualism; I do not beleive in a kind of universal mind.

So I think they are incorrect.
Agreed, cooperation is useful and I don¬īt see that as exclusive to self interest.
