Default How to ask for help in school?

I am a young teenager going into my sophomore year in high school and in my first year as the years before, my marks were at mediocre levels. I always thought I just need to smarten up or take it more seriously however it turns out that in grade 1 special education educators have told my parents that I need to have a iep but my parents have never token this seriously (Individual Education Plan) and in gr 6 I was diagnosed with auditory processing disorder (http://www.asha.org/public/hearing/d...-apd-child.htm > there's a basic introduction to apd) I also have all the symptoms of add(I took a questioner from my doctor for this but I havent been able to get it back to him) and I have severe depression as an a result last fall I faked sickness for about 2 weeks cause I couldn't function and in april I had a panic attack. My question is though how can I go about asking for help in school cause I dont know how to go about it and this year I want to atleast reach honor roll because even though I think I have the intelligence I dont know how to apply. (Not trying to sound really bitchy as my mom would say its just that I thought I would include all my problems and see what advice I could get cause I dont really have anybody to ask for advice.)

No, I am in the catholic education system in Canada (basically the same as public school but we have a couple of religious classes each week)

There's generally a school counselor or education specialist that handles special cases. The easiest thing might be to go to the highest-level person at the school (principal?) and ask them who you should talk to with your concerns. I think it's great you're seeking help. I have a hard time processing auditory information too and I understand how frustrating that can be! Hope they can work with you and hope you get honor roll

I like what you wrote in your first post. Did you express that to your teachers? I talked to my teachers and tried to make friends with them. I felt like it helped my grades, if they could find favor with me. If nothing else, a teacher could point you to the proper staff member that can help you.

I think the teachers at my school have the generally wrong impression of at this point in time because I got in a few fights over the past couple years (the school starts at grade 7) and I started smoking weed(I stopped) and every knew about it and I never payed attention because I would be to busy reading philosophy or novels so most teachers dont generally like me.( However me and my English teacher hit it off and we would always debate in class on whether people things such as if evil really exists or if its just someones stand point and stuff like that)

Ty and yea it can get really frustrating especially in classes like math and science where the teacher does a lecture and I end up not missing key parts and messing up certain parts.

Yeah, I understand. My biggest strategy has always been voraciously take notes and draw the whole time. For reasons I don't understand, I process auditory information better when I am doing something with my hands, drawing in particular. I used to get in trouble for it, because they thought I was goofing off instead of listening. Made me so angry - it was the exact opposite. Without a pen in my hand, my mind would wander.

Have you tried asking teachers if you could get a visual copy of their notes prior to the lectures? Most lecturers will have a pretty decent set of notes to go off of, and I imagine it wouldn't be too much trouble for them to do a quick photocopy...

First, you have taken a huge step in realizing that, for whatever reason, your parents aren't helping you out in this matter and that you unfortunately need to take it upon yourself. Acknowledging that you need help is something that can be very difficult for anyone, and the fact that at your age you have the maturity level to 1) identify your needs and 2) be willing to ask for help to have them met is really impressive. So congrats on that.

You said that you made a connection with an English teacher. I would start there-- ask him or her if you can talk after school or another time when you can talk privately. Then tell him or her what you told us in your first post. If you are honest and say you know you've had some problems with behavior in the past (smoking post, fighting), and then let the teacher know that you really want to do better but you think you need some help, he or she should be able to point you in the right direction.
Masquerading as a normal person day after day is exhausting.
