Advice Required from Artists/Graphic Designers on their career choice

So I'm considering re-training and applying for a Fine Arts Degree, maybe focusing on Painting or Print Media and doing a major in Graphic Design. Would love to hear from some people first hand about what the industry is like (though I'm in Australia), what the realities of working in this field are and if you have any tips on putting together a portfolio??

I should also mention that I think this might be a good match for me personality-wise and cognitively. I'm an INFP, my enneagram is 4w5 and I am a visual learner. In Multiple Intelligences I score high on intrapersonal, musical and visual/spatial. Any thoughts??
