Well, a person who criticizes him/herself has more to lose than a person who criticizes for other. I consider where a person comes from to understand his/her motivations, which may be a combination of self-serving intentions, as well as a desire to help.
Person's background influences about 5% of what I think of them. When other topics in the discussions have been handled and it's the background that has stayed unspoken, that's when I turn my attention to such issues. Perhaps earlier, depending on what ideas occur to me.
